This thread has been split from the original thread about the test match between Zimbabwe and India as it is far too off topic.

Everybody is saying how promising Andre Nel is and Simon Jones. Well let me say this, they are both 28 and in their peak as a bowler. Both of these bowlers were hopeless when they were 20 years ago, i doubt they could even swing a ball. Irfan Pathan at the tender age of 20 has acheived (in terms of ability) what both of these bowlers have achieved recently. One can only imagine how Irfan Pathan will be bowling in his peak the age of 28. Plus his batting also has alot of potential.

Waseem, no offence but you have already been told - Simon Jones is only 26 and, furthermore, isn't yet close to his peak.

Simon Jones is 26 now, and was 23 the first time I saw in the 2002-03 Ashes in Australia. He looked a promising bowler even at that early stage, and it's fair to say, if it weren't for the horrendous injuiry he secured back then, some sort of ligament tear it was, that took something like 12 months to recover from, things could have been a lot different for the Welshman now.

At 26, Simon Jones should not be in consideration for the title of most promising young bowler.

That person should be 23 and younger IMO.

Pretty decent series, that.

Plus, his first series against WI was his first back from injury in which he returned the following statistics, pretty decent given the fact that he'd played one first class game for England A before the tour.

The Wisden Trophy (Eng/WI) in West Indies, 2003/04 [Series]
Eng 4 94 374 11 5/57 6/101 34.00 3.97 51.2 1

fair enough - i was basing it on stats without actually checking them out (though i did make that disclaimer at the bottom of my post).

those are pretty decent records indeed!

If you were coming up with candidates for each country under the age of 23 then Pathan would be the best of the crop, that isn't to say he will be better than the likes of Simon Jones through his career but if you stick to the criteria of the age then Pathan is clearly the pick of the bunch. We do need to be wary of overhyping at this early stage with Pathan as he has over half his wickets against the mighty Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. We will know more at the end of the winter matches.
