Greatest performances on debut...

In another thread we are reminded that Lou Vincent had a pretty stunning debut, notching up 104 and 54 against a full strength Aussie attack playing at Perth. We are also reminded of Michael Clarke's stunning first-innings 151 on debut.

Of course... Stuart Clarke was even more sensational on debut: 5/55 and 4/34.

Andrew Strauss recently notched up 112 and 83 on debut... and Pietersen eclipsed that completely with a 57 and an unbeaten 64 against a rampant McGrath and Warne. Cook then chipped in with 60 and 104 not out at Nagpur.

Other nominations please!

This is not in test cricket but Matthew Haydens first domestic match, before he went out to bat he asked his team mates if anyone have made a double ton on debut, then he went out and made 149.

Noticable batting debuts
  • Matthew Sinclairs 214 against the West Indies
  • Doug Walters 155 against England at Brisbane
  • Jacobus Rudolph's 222 not out against Bangladesh
  • Mohammad Ashraful's 114 in the second innings against Sri Lanka
Noticable bowling debuts
  • Lance Klusener's 8/64 in the second innings against India
  • Clarence Grimmetts 5/45 & 6/37 on debut against England
  • Mohammad Zahid's 4/64 & 7/66 against New Zealand
  • Manjural Islam's 6/81 against Bangladesh

Graham Thorpe got a ton in his first match at Trent Bridge in 93 when England were a poor side.

What about Bob Massie's 16/137 at Lord's against England in 1972?

I'm not saying that this was the greatest debut ever, but was a fabulous debut nevertheless.

What about Azharuddin's three centuries in his first three test matches?

Hirwani's 16 wickets on debut against a full strength West Indies team in 1987-88.

Foster's 287, which still remains the highest score on Debut.

Lawrence Rowe's sensational debut series in 1973

Greenidge (93 and 107) on debut against India in 1974-75. Andrew Strauss also had a similar debut.

And finally, Bannerman, scoring the first ever test century (165) in the very first test match in 1877 must rate as one of the finest debuts

Hirwani's debut was a dream one. He clean bowled Viv Richards in that match. He could never repeat that performance and soon disappeared from international cricket.

I also remember Virendra Sehwag scoring a century on his test debut in England against England.

Sehwag scored a century on debut against South Africa in South Africa and not in England.

I remember tresco getting 79 against Zimbabwe on ODI debut, was there at the oval. Also didn't G.Smith for South Africa do well on debut?

Peter Petherick of NZ took hat-trick on the first day of his very first test match against Pakistan in 1976-77. This must rank as one of the most remarkable debuts.

Not really got 3 in his first innings, but did manage 68 in the second innings. The only thing his debut was notably for was the fact that he blubbed to the media about how nasty those horrible Aussies were.

Some good debuts - Mark Waugh (138), Greg Blewett (102 N.O), Sourav Gangly (131), and Peter Taylor (6-78), all against England!!
