Could get Ed Smith over - he could play as an opener - or at #3, I think Bell is more exposed than ever now that Trescothick has gone home, I would have been happier with Bell coming in after a decent start.

Trescothick was in fact Englands mosr experienced player, I think he's irreplacable.

The problem with that though is he has no experience of Australian pitches, hasn't faced a world-class attack for several years (if ever) and is probably a million miles from the selectors minds.

At least if we do play Key the Aussies might be a bit easier on Monty.

Well yes there's a thought, however I am a supporter of both key and Smith, so key woud do just fine.

Yes - but being he has been selected I will support him, I don't think I mentioned his score in the one day match, but really without trescothick before him - I fear the worst, at least today I do.

What's the deal with bigging up Rob Key and Ed Smith who've done nothing? Key averages pretty much the same as Bell does against the Aussies. And hasn't done alot else outside of that.

Ed Smith done nothing of note to get picked either.

This is a big moment in the Ashes, Trescothick is one of Englands most improtant players and it is a shame to not see him in the Ashes. No matter who comes in it will be a weaker batting line up. But Cook opening and Collingwood in the middle order is the way to go. Don't even bother with Key he is a good first class batsman but nothing more.

Smith did not get much of a chance did he?, don't forget Bell had a bad series against the Aussies in home conditions, key given half the chances of others, would have come good IMO - and his chances came in two halves, in out like Ramp's.

From what Fletcher has said there is no way you can pick Trescothick again unless he has played a lot of games for Somerset and proved he is ok.I wouldn't consider him until the summer of 2008 and by then we may have totally moved on anyway.I hope he recovers and can come back but i very much doubt it.
