| I haven't got an order but my three are: Dream Theater, Metallica and Transatlantic. Although I listen to a bit of everything except rap and rnb.

| On recent form, and sticking with the mainstream stuff.... Knopfler.... without even a close challenger: his duets with Emmylou Harris (one released to date, the rest follow) should be the release of the decade... with a level of craftsmanship in songwring and quality of musicianship and singing in performance that will stand comparison with anything done in any era. I'm tending to go with collaborations at the moment: Sting's most recent album was at it's best in collaboration (notably Mary J Blige)... and Willie Nelson's been doing great stuff with younger artists who've responded well to his challenge to really work WITH a song and forget their conventional, formulaic approaches (Sheryl Crow, Lee Ann Womak and others). That said.. the Christmas wish list is headed by a John Prine 4-CD set: everything I've heard to date has been awesome and I'm assured I'll regret buying this one for the rest of my days... because it will only make me wish I'd gone for the original albums instead. |

| Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits for me. Though his latest solo albums have included a goodly number of poor songs (in my opinion), somehow he manages to keep on producing three or four golden tracks per album. His soundtrack to Local Hero is probably the most moving guitar piece I can think of. Went to see him live this summer - greatest gig I've ever attended. Yes, overall I'd choose him. Though Queen are pretty good as well. |
