Howzat11's view on the VB series- South Africa vs Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka chokes at the sight of victory

It was a good pitch to bat in and it was shown that as South Africa chose to bat and with a gutsy perfomance by Graeme Smith and Dippendar, South Africa were 0 for 74. But then, Smith was again dismissed cheaply and Van Der Wath was again out without scoring a run. It was then Gibbs who came in with a drop in form to jokn Dippendar. As Dippendar had got his fifty, Sri Lanka put out their spinners Muraliduran and Bandara to slow down the game. IN fact, it did the opposite as Gibbs smashed fours through cover and slapped three sixes onto the onside. Dippendar provided good support. It was when Gibbs, on 68 was bowled through his legs. Pollock let Dippendar have the strike as Dippendar cruised to his 100. It was a 4 of the last over that brought up his new high score of 121 and South Africa's total of 263.

Sri Lanka started terribly as Muburak was out hitting a wild shot and was caught by Ashwell Prince- Sri Lanka had scored only 16 of 8 overs when Sangakarra and Jayasuriya started their assault on the bowlers Pollock and Langeveldt as Jayasuriya showed his talent and form. This brought a change to the bowling attack and Andrew Hall replaced Pollock. The first ball was wide to the onside but by brilliant keeping by Mark Boucher, Jayasuriya was stumped. The next over Van der Wath started his first over and bowled a good slower ball and Sangakarra was caught and out. This slowed the run rate down but it was Jaywardene and Attapatu that lifted the run rate as they hurried to the total. With 9 overs left anf about 60 runs left, Sri Lanka were definite favourites. However, Sri Lanka choked as Arnold, Jayawardene, Attapatu, Vaas and the tail were all out. It was a relieving win by South Africa as they still have a chance at the VB series. Pollock was so relieved that he instinctively hugged umpire Aleem Dar!!!

Australia-10 points
Sri Lanka-9 points
South Africa-8 points
