Sharon 'Expected to die today'

Quote:
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, incapacitated by a stroke in January, is undergoing emergency surgery for digestive complications and a hospital source says he's likely to die by the end of the day.

"We expect him to die today," said the source, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorised to speak to the media on behalf of Jerusalem's Hadassah hospital.

Earlier, hospital spokesman Ron Krumer said a CT scan had revealed "serious damage to the prime minister's digestive system" and he was being taken for emergency surgery.

Yael Bosem-Levy, a hospital spokeswoman, said Sharon's condition had deteriorated to its most critical point since his admission to the facility. She said at 11.30am that surgery could take between three and six hours.

Saddening news. Whatever his military past, I regarded him and Arafat- though by no means the best of friends, the catalysts to Middle-Eastern Peace. Now it faces an uncertain era.

With due respect Paoli, old bean , those are probably the last words most neutrals would use when describing Arik. Sharon never cared much for the "peace process" and to his credit, was not hypocritical enough to pretend otherwise. His life's mission was to secure the cultural, military and political supremacy of the Zionist Entity over the inhabitants of what is now Occupied Palestine, and to a great extent, he seems to have succeeded, in the short term at least. IMHO, to describe him (and Arafat, for that matter) as a "catalyst" for peace is naive on so many different levels, and a great disservice to both.

On a less serious note, I would argue that it is logically impossible to be a "catalyst" for something that is non-existent.

How about this as an epitaph: Sharon and Arafat, the two men who did more than any others to put Hamas into power in (some small parts of) Occupied Palestine.

Well I've got a belief that Palestine had a chance to become an independent nation...though I can't say I follow it closely.

Maybe not catalyst...but ya' know what I mean, don'tcha?

And there are of course going to be different views from those of eastern stock than those of western stock.

Catalyst was a stupid word to use, but I still do firmly believe that Sharo- though his main ambition was the safety of his people, and yes, I understand that some may see the way Israel treat Palestine as similar to apartheid...but I did believe Sharon was committed to eventually giving "Occupied" Palestine a state of their own. Though you may argue otherwise...

Never when Sharon was in power though. You sure you are not confusing him with Rabin, or even with Ehud Barak?

Fair enough, and the truth is we will never know what he may or may not have eventually done - we can only comment on the man's statements and actions whilst he was in power, and I am afraid they do not paint a comforting picture, for "Easterners" or "Westerners" alike.

Just went on ninemsn.com.au again and found out that Ariel Sharon is 'out of immediate danger'.

Whatever your thoughts on him, he's a bloody tough fighter.

I think Paoli must be referring to the withdrawal from some of the Gaza and West Bank settlements. However, this wasn't done to aid peace with Palestine. Rather, Sharon ordered the withdrawals as it allowed him to more effectively protect Israelis from attack. George W Bush called it a 'histroric gesture', thus further illustrating why peace in the Holy Land will definitely not happen within the next 3 years.

When are you hoping he dies, then?

It'll still co-incide with your spouse's name won't it?

That is what I meant though Mongoose. I perhaps mistakenly saw it as a chance at peace.

So did I at first - although it didn't seem in keeping with Sharon's previous dealings with Palestine.
