Hmmm.... not sure I'd have any off that list! Off the topof my head I might consider some from the following pretty eclectic list...

Educating Rita
Hannah and Her Sisters
Dead Poet's Society / Good Morning Vietnam
Rain Man / The Graduate
Heat
Scent of a Woman
Manon des sources / Jean de Florette
Fried Green Tomatoes
2001: A Space Odyssey
Touching the Void

Pulp fiction in there too I'd argue should be up there. 2001 for cinnematography but that aside a pointless film in my eyes. Dead poets society I found a tad o n the patronising side.

Heat is a cracking choice, purely for THE best shootout on film.

There are some good suggestions on this earlier thread http://www.world-a-team.com/showthre...highlight=film

It's good to see proper films getting prominence in the awards ceremonies this year, instead of candy-floss c**p that has proliferated in the past e.g. Titanic. Maybe cinema is getting a grip is becoming more than just another american money-making machine.

Downfall
All Quiet on the Western Front

Only ones that spring to mind as having had an effect on me.

As for the Dead Poets sociaty Rach, I hated it! Bunch of rich kids with no spine who think that standing on a desk makes up for betraying the guy who gave their lives some substance.

Ere' Ere'!!!

I went and saw Good Night and Good Luck the other evening... Fantastic. All this crap in the Conservative media about Hollywood being out of touch with Mainstream America only proves one thing: Most Americans arn't awfully intelligent!!!

With you on that one mate.

Also, I must see Downfall, but haven't had the chance yet.

My favourite films? The Quiet Earth, Goodbye Lenin, Aliens... Hmm... I'm sure I'll think of some more...

You can see the difference in choices between the sexes. No criticism of Rachael's picks but most of them can easily be defined as chickflicks while a lot of the men have picked typical male films.

My choices

Aliens
Philadelphia
Jaws
Regarding Henry

Not sure I totally agree with you there.
Rain Man, The Graduate, Manon des sources, Jean de Florette, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Touching the Void are fantastic films. Especially Touching the Void, which is certainly not a chick flick. I don't think Rain Man, 2001, Manon or Jean can really be said to be 'chick flicks'

Of the others, Scent of a Woman is decent, but a bit chick flicky whilst in my opinion Dead Poets Society and Good Morning Vietnam are very annoying. Robin Williams is such a good actor when he really tries. 24 Hour Photo shows what a good actor he can be.

By the way, I just saw down the video show that there's been a remake of the Poseidon Adventure.... Starring Steve Guttenberg... Oh dear oh dear.

A couple from leftfield -

The Falcon & The Snowman
The Killing Fields
Midnight Cowboy
Donnie Darko

and the ones that made me laugh (and yes, I do have kids!)

Shrek I & Shrek II (Antony Bandares - sublime)
Madagascar (Sasha Baron Cohan as Head Lemur - I nearly soiled myself)
Pirates of the Caribbean (big big Jonny Depp fan)

Of the recent ones, Munich is very good. Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction. Basic Instinct is good too; even without the skin-show!
