Most overated films

Not necessarily the worst films but the most over hyped, shouldn't of got the acclaim they did.
1. Silence of the lambs
2.Trainspotting
3.Rain man
4.Lock stock and smoking barrellls

Hard not to agree with any of those John. Silence of the lambs wasnt a bad film just hyped to the point of implosion. trainspotting was one of those films that was good, but nearly 10 years on - i feel it might be a bit dated. Lock stock was well over rated. As were the last 3 (i've seen two of them) Star wars films which were awful.

Trainspotting was not a bad film, there was lots of action to keep people entertained.

I think the worst films was the "Scream Film" and it's follow ups.

The most hyped film, and probaby one of the worst, was the "Blair Witch Project" was almost v certainly the most boring.

Pretty much anything involving Steve Martin, Danny DeVito or Jim Carrey... most things involving Tom Hanks....and just about everything that's ever described as a spoof or adverstised with a slapstick trailer... most especially... my top 2nominations... Austin Powers and Wayne's World - the most mindlessly idiotic and contemptible, grossly overhyped and irredeemable trash in the history of film.

Other lousy junk that gets talked up for no good reason: Jaw, Jurasic Park and anything remotely ]similar... plus E.T - I'd rather watch Jean-Claude Van Damme grunt or Julia Roberts smile inanely.

Almost 100% agreement except for Jaws. A very good summary of the over hyped.

They may be trash in terms of content, plot and acting but who cares? They are comedy films with the pure design to make people laugh. IMO they serve their purpose to make people laugh, or at least the audience they are aimed at laugh. They are overated for the right reasons, I do agree they are not really worthy to be appreciated as great films that deserve the highest awards but that isn't their aim.

I've nothing against good comedy: many, from "The Life of Brian" and "Annie Hall" through to "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" the genre boasts excellent pedigree... and most of the best get nominated for oscars for things like the screenplay!

I'm amazed to see no-one has yet rounded on the toe-curlingly nauseating, ridiculously cheesy and badly acted Titanic. Even Kate Winslet, who's usually a decent actress, looked wooden in it. Yes, it's my least favourite film ever. And it must be the most over-hyped, when you consider how many Oscars it won and how many millions it made at the box office. Never have so many people spent so much money on so much tripe.
