Murali

Quick question

Cricinfo spells Murali's name as Muttiah Muralitharan
http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/srila...yer/49636.html

and that is how I always thought it was spelt - and CricInfo is also the official site for Sri Lankan Cricket
http://sl.cricinfo.com/link_to_datab...TIONAL/SL/SLC/

However the ICC rankings site spells his name Muttiah Muralidaran
http://www.lgiccrankings.com/test/bo...ay.php?id=1991

This is part of the official ICC site...

Does anyone know whether the ICC or the Sri Lankan board is correct in how they spell his name?

I alway saw his name as Muttiah Muralitharan. There may be some mistake by ICC.

FF, I do not know have any specific knowledge of this matter, but have some general comments whihc might be useful: variations in the English transliterations of many sub-continental or Asian names are quite common. Murali's name is spelt and written a certain way in his native Tamil, and in the Sri Lankan Sinhalese; transliterating that into English could quite easily get you different English spellings, all trying to approximate to the original Tamil. The most common example of this is the name Muhammad, which is variously spelt Mohammad, Mohammed, Muhammad etc in English, but all the English versions refer to the same Arabic word and are equally correct/incorrect.

I doubt it. If I remember correctly, Muralidaran is also the spelling often used on his one-day shirts, so it might actually be the one chosen by Murali/the Sri Lankan cricket board.

I thought that probably would be the case but wondered why they ICC and the Sri Lankan board differed on this?

I have always spelt it with a TH and said it with a D. So I can understand the confusion, I just think after 10+ years in International cricket there would have been a standard spelling?

Definitely transliteration: he wore Muralidaran shirts at the world cup recently. As for standardisation - it could take an age. From another language you still see Mao Tse-Tung, Mao Tse Tung and Mao Zedong according to which newspaper you pick up, and I understand that Korean offers numerous options for most names. Anyway, we all know the bloke we are talking about, don't we?

I agree with Maranello It may be the problem of native language. As I write my username as my name which is Arsalan. But many people in Pakistan write it as Arslan and also the Example of Muhammad and there are many examples like this.
