Sir Ian Botham

Ian Botham was knighted for his services to charity and cricket in the Queen's Birthday Honours List which was published today. Congratulations to him: where's Richie Benaud, Ma'am?

Richly deserved for his charity walks.

At least we didn't see Sir David Beckham this year though it will surely happen at some point.

Watching Sir Ian being interviewed on Sky at the moment. I see he has raised more than 10 million pounds for charity. Good on him.

Just read something else too...."knight" is from old English meaning "servant". And with his charity work he has been a good servant.

and at least 1 cricketer turned knighthood down!

It's a quaint old tradition, but none the worse for it, in my view. You're right about the service element, Wanderer: even today our knights vow to serve Her Majesty, whatever the heck that means! There was a line or two in The Guardian this morning, quoting a learned professor who was commenting on the knighthood awarded today to Salman Rushdie and suggesting that it was a bit odd that he was now vowing to serve the Queen of the country which he was (allegedly) pretty unpleasant about in The Satanic Verses. Really? I mean - who cares? Let's just accept it as an acknowledgement of some great work by Sir Salman and Sir Ian over the years. I'm happy enough to congratulate them both!
