Music thread

Rahul Dravid is no.1 started the football thread so i just decided to start a music thread to see what peoples interests in music are.

I personally like Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, and RnB such as Usher, Destinys Child and so on. But my favourite type of music is dance or house music, Ministry of Sound is one artist.

Just seeing what the interest is as there is a decent age gap between the youngest and the oldest and i could infact be the youngest!!!

Music

Well my taste in music is wide and varied, i'll try any band once. I even listened to an album of white noise once.
I collect vinyl and had at one time records featuring brass bands and steamtrains. I tend to listen to Rock more than anything, but my collection includes classical and opera.
At the moment i'm into Lamb and Aha. Next week it'll be Bowie and Frank Zappa. The week after King Crimson and the Art of noise. Then probably someone else.
So it depends what mood i'm in. I'll even listen to punk and heavy metal and then half an hour later i'll be humming along to something light and fluffy.
I find most singles in the charts are by artists who in my opinion lack talent and are often one hit wonders, or by long established names raking over the coals of their careers.
The album chart sometimes catches my eye.
Last band I saw live? Disturbingly , Gong or Hawkwind. Or was it Groundhogs?. Can't be 100% certain but it was in the early 90's.
Last event I went to? Kent custom motorbike show (and the headline act was a really **** poor ****ing **** Gary Glitter; never seen so many bottles of urine head the same direction.)
Worst band/act seen live. It has to barclay james harvest. at the corn exchange in cambridge. My brother comes a close second (he'll kill me for saying so).Gary Glitter comes third. (but i left after one song so can't really judge. the wet t shirt contest was on in the adjacent stage, much more entertaining.)
best band /act seen live. dunno really. I saw lots of quality acts in the 90's. Possibly the Groundhogs.?
In France every year there is a fête de music and everyone dusts down their harmonica/piano/trumpet/accordion/harp and drags it into the summer streets , gets drunk and plays a tune; (even i've been known to tinkle those ivories)Most entertaining. and surprisingly high quality.(but alas not from me)

Talking

Anything from Jethro Tull, through to Fairport Convention, Cara Dillon, Kate Rusby. Just bought the Kasabian Album, and also love The Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers, The Ordinary boys and Razorlight.

Basically anything that avoids the singles chart and could be classed as "Pop"

i've got loads of eary Tull in the collection, This was, thick as a brick, jethro tull, aqualung, stand up and even minstrel in the gallery but after heavy horses it got 'bad'. All island!

As for fairport conention, yep, like it. Early Crimson line ups included Judy Dyble on vocals in 1968, before greg lake did the vocals. (who didn't early kning crimson line ups include. Rock family trees)
Don't know Cara Dillon or Kate Rushby or any of the other bands you mention but if i heard the tune i'd probably sa. So still lots to discover it seems.
Stangley enough, 'Reign in blood' is also in the collection along with some other Slayer albums. Hmm. At the time i thought the producer was good. (I bought an album cos the producer was good? Rick Rubyens from memory?)

favorate album of all time? from the collection surpisingly its a Talk Talk album, spirit of eden. Doesn't get any better .
least favorite album of all time? well dunno but the worst ones in the collection include ' it's a beautiful day' or perhaps anything by 'weather report.' Rush sometimes are bad and Yes can leave me wondering exactly what it was I was on at the time. Forbidden evil. now they were bad.

Elgar is also hidden in there, cello concerto and the sea songs.
When CD came along it cost a fortune to transfer, and now it looks like i pods or whatever will take over. Come back Vinyl all is forgiven. Those comforting days , the ritual of actually playing and savoring a record; Now it's just chuck on some background music on CD. The seperates are long gone.
When i moved to France vast section of the collection got sold at varoius record fares:given to mates/sold on ebay/ and i only kept the cream. (or did I?)

I love Keane I'm completelly addicted to their songs, Somewhere Only We Know is the best song I've heard since Aitebar by JJ (a singer from Pakistan, who has given up singing now for a good cause) and I love This Is The Last Time just as much.

I don't mind Atomic Kittens, they're kind of cool , also like Enrique Igleasis, Justin Timberlake, Brian Adams and few Birtney Spears songs - don't liker her, just a few of her songs, particularly Oopps & One More Time. In other things I also listen to Sting and Clem Snide quite often, Destiny's Child and U2 aren't bad either - I can listen to them all. I also quite like Celine Dion (sorry for wrong sp)

From locals, my favorite is/was/will be forever JJ, from the recent brigade I like Strings a lot, don't mind listening to Noori but absolutely hate EP, Jal, Atif & Fuzon (these guys IMHO don't know how to sing, they seem to me like they're crying or something). Don't like that new India-Canadian Raghav guy too. Past favorite include Nazia and Zohaib. Another thing I listen to quite often which isn't technically music but somewhat like that are songs by people like Dawood Wansbury, Yusuf Islam (former Kat Steven (sorry for wrong sp) ) and my favorite Sami Yusuf.

ps: anyone wanting to listen to some music from my country can always visit www.pakistanimusic.com

Aah. Music. My other pet subject. I used to be the Head of Music for a Radio Station and have written questions for popular music quizzes in the past.

Anyway. To the point. I like most music, but am very opinionated about the stuff I hate. I despise that recent song 'My neck my back' and any modern US R&B rubbish. I especially hate R Kelly or anyone who puts 'ya ya yeah' or 'uh uh uhhh' as lyrics in a song. I prefer the Stones to the Beatles by a huge amount; but some sixties beat music is decent enough (the kinks, hollies etc.) The seventies were pretty poor, though having been brought up with a dad who listened to ELO and Bruce Springsteen I find myself singing along with them when they're on the radio - unless I can stop myself.

The eighties were diabolical for music - apart from Joy Division (Love Will Tear Us Apart is an all-time classic - look out for the film of Ian Curtis' life coming soon), New Order and Aztec Camera. I do have to admit to seeing Iron Maiden in concert before though

Well, the 90s are my expert decade. Anything from the Soup Dragons or Sub Sub through Blur, Suede and the Longpigs up until the Jurassic 5, the Doves, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and beyond.

Also... Manufactured pop is pretty poor.

On a final note... Can we please start a campaign to ban cover versions from the charts? Atomic Kitten's cover of Blondie, any song covered by Girls Aloud, Madonna's cover of American Pie... All complete unadulerated rubbish that makes me sick... Oh it makes me mad... The only cover versions that should be allowed are ones that are completely different (i.e. different styles)
