Rugby World Cup 2011: Venue announcement due

I know some people here are rugby followers, so just a reminder that the venue for the 2011 World Cup is due to be announced today at 1730 GMT. I'll post here when I see the announcement. In the frame are Japan, New Zealand and South Africa, and my money is on South Africa.

That must be some kind of a record for the fastest obsolete post! Less than five minutes after I went to press, South Africa was eliminated in round one of the voting. A majority vote now decides the matter, and it could all be over rather sooner than 1730, it seems.

Part of me wishes they'd give it to Japan, cos that would be a real laugh, and also I think some of the 2nd tier nations should be given a chance to host major tournaments.

New Zealand it is. I guess Japan was always an outside chance.

Part of me is pleased that a proper rugby nation has got it in New Zealand but there is also a part of me that remembers how good a job the Japanese did with the football World Cup and i presume that it would have been the same with the rugby. It might have been a chance to make Rugby a more global game instead of a few serious contenders and a lot of stragglers.

Yeah, Umaga is retiring from Rugby. I reckon NZ will do a great job with hosting the world cup
