I agree that XP has a major setback in not having DOS around, but nevertheless I vastly prefer it to any other version. But the next best would easily be 98SE.

As for browsing, im fully with Rachael, Opera is by far the best for me. Very fast, loads of handy features, loads java without any hassles, been using it for a long time and never touch IE.

Richie > What is it that you find so difficult to use Opera, I personally think its very user friendly.

OPera the browser wasnt bad to be honest and was stunningly quick, I just wanted the same software brand doing both jobs, ie firefox & tbird, navigator, or IE & OE. Opera mail was awful. Gave it some tests last night and navigator still has the best of both worlds. If I ignore the mail bit of opera I might persevere with that.

Rach, if you've got that many browers I'd still check out navigator to see how it rates.

I did my first programming in the days of CPM and we got our first PC in the midst of the power struggle between that and MS-DOS.. but to be honest it should have died the moment the first Mac was invented.. and should have been buried when Windows NT was first released.

NT was at version 4 by 1994.. before Windows 95 was released.. and it was better than 1995.. and indeed better than 98: scapping the old DOS kernal had allowed Microsoft to do things right. So right.. that windows 2000 Pro (their best product yet) and windows XP (sop to home users) are based on it.

95 and 98 were always destined to be disasters.. an dso it proved: completely flakey, they should have been marketed as "windows for sad gaming people who want to hold back the world of computing by a generation".

Dos now? Why! If you know enough to do anythign useful in it you should probably be running Linux anyway!!!

Microsoft despite all their best efforts have to use DOS in Windows XP, they would like a DOS free system but thus far it has proved impossible.
I agree over windows 98, was in my eyes very unstable, I upgraded to windows ME, millenium which was even worse.

But a fact remains, lots still like 98, and would say it is more stable than XP.

Why would home users want windows 2000?.

They are not my speciality either Paoli, far from as a matter of fact. But I know what a broswer is, and I think I know what pop up blockers are, I think I also know what a fire wall is, but that's only because I think I do . DOS, i think we were taught about it at school, but I use to hate using it, so I don't remember correctly. I came across DOS quite a lot when I had Windows 98, especially when running a few games (of cds), its kind off like a black screen with strange things written on it
