The only teams who receive concessions are Brisbane and Sydney which are being repeeled after this season...They are fair game IMHO, encourages players to stay there....

Here is my Historical heroes thing

1.Adelaide Crows- Historical Hero: Graham Cornes (founding coach, Tony Modra (Mercurial talent up forward), Malcolm Blight (coached the two premierships in a row)
2.Brisbane Lions- Historical hero: Leigh Matthews (Coach of the three premierships in a row), Michael Voss (Brownlow Medallist and widely regarded as one of the best players in the AFL)
3.Carlton Blues- Historical Hero: David Parkin (coached three premierships during his time at the helm), Anthony Koutoufidies (Regarded as one of the best in the AFL, now has possibly past his use by date), Stephen Kernahan (Premiership Captain, duel premiership player, now retired but at his peak was the premier Centre Half Forward), Alex Jesualenko (Premiership Captain and Coach, also took one of the greatest marks of all time in GF 77), Steve Silvagni (Full back of the century)
4.Collingwood Magpies-Historical Hero: Gordon Coventry (Played during 20's and 30's, kicked a then record 1299 career goals), Nathan Buckley (one of the best players in the AFL, Brownlow Medallist), Leigh Matthews (was their last premiership coach)
5.Essendon Bombers-Historical Hero: Kevin Sheedy (5 premierships as coach, entering his 24th year at the helm), James Hird (courageous and one of the best in the AFL, Brownlow Medallist), Simon Madden (Brilliant ruckman in his day, played a club record 372 games), Matthew Lloyd (Multiple Coleman Medals, which are awarded for the most goals in a season and is widely tipped to be the ultimate goalkicker in terms of goals when he retires)
6.Fremantle Dockers-Historical Hero: Ben Allen (Founding captain), Matthew Pavlich (The clubs first star, at 23 has been All-Australian twice), Peter Bell (Captain reliable, All Australian three times, entering 5th year at the helm as captain)
7.Geelong Cats-Historical Hero: Gary Ablett (Was an absolute freak, could turn a game on its head whenever he wanted it to, widely regarded as one of the greats of the game, has been neglected lately due to alleged drug use), Polly Farmer (First Aboriginal at the club, one of the first in the competition, Premiership player), Sam Newman (Media Personality and 300 gamer for Geelong)
8.Hawthorn Hawks-Historical Hero: Peter Hudson (One of the best Full Forwards to ever play the game, once kicked 160 goals in a season), Leigh Matthews (one of the roughest players to ever play AFL, widely debated as to whether he was the greatest to have played the game), Shane Crawford (Current player, ex captain, Brownlow Medallist and the best player. Excellent midfielder and has done alot of work off the field)
9.Kangaroos (ex North Melbourne)-Historical Hero: Wayne Carey (Possibly the greatest player to have ever played, played with such ease and was by far the best Centre Half Forward of his time. Could turn a match around at the drop of a hat, will be remembered for an off field incident which saw him leave the club 3 years ago), Glenn Archer (Shinboner of the century, which is a Kangaroos award voted by all players to determine who the most courageous and best player was for their entire history, tough as nails in his final year), Denis Pagan (ex coach who won two premierships, tactical genius now coaching Carlton, turned North from easybeats to one of the best)
10.Melbourne Demons-Historical Hero: Ron Barassi (Premiership player and coach. Possibly the best ever coach in the AFL, played during 60's 70's), Robbie Flower, ( A genius up forward, was one of Melbourne's true greats).
11.Port Adelaide Power-Historical Hero: John Cahill (Founding coach), Mark Williams (coached the club to its first premiership), SANFL (The South Australian competition where Port Adelaide originally was and they won 30 premierships. Although the Power are a different franchise to the SANFL version, many SANFL Port supporters support Port in the AFL)
12.Richmond Tigers-Historical Hero: Kevin Bartlett (Games record holder, 403 to be exact, a silky midfielder who has since turned his back on the club), Matthew Richardson (Current full forward, bad attitude but is still somehow regarded as a star), Jack Dyer (Captain blood, a great of the game, was one of the first captains and possibly the best ever Richmond Player)
13.St Kilda Saints-Historical Hero: Darrell Baldock (Premiership Captain, the Saints only one), Barry Breen (kicked a behind to ensure the Saints would win that premiership by one point, former games record holder), Robert Harvey (duel Brownlow Medallist, a brilliant midfielder one of the best we have ever seen and will retire after this season), Tony Lockett (kicked 800 goals and won a Brownlow at St. Kilda)
14.Sydney Swans-Historical Hero: Paul Kelly (Original Captain Courageous, did his knee so many times yet kept going and going. Never feared any opponent and won the Brownlow Medal in 1995). Tony Lockett (single handedly got the Swans in to the 96 Grand Final, kicked a record amount of goals and won 3 Coleman Medals at Sydney. Even tried a comeback in 2002 where he failed dismally).
15. West Coast Eagles-Historical Hero: Peter Matera (Possibly the best individual to have played for the club, was extremely fast and had beautiful skills), John Worsfold (current coach and ex captain, was as tough as nails and rough as guts, never letting up on an opponent, Mick Malthouse (coached the Eagles to two premierships)
16. Western Bulldogs-Historical Hero: EJ Whitten (The father of modern football in a way. Was an advocate for players rights, 300 games for the Western Bulldogs and even coached them. Coached Victoria in state of origin, hated the South Australians and is remembered by most for a lap around the MCG in a motorcade in the 95 State of Origin match, when he was blind after suffering from cancer. EJ, or "Teddy" as he is more commonly known, died in late 1995.)

Hope that clears it up a little, just thought mine differed from ackers.

Port and the Crows as well as West Coast and Fremantle get the same salary cap as all the Victorian teams, however Brisbane and Sydney get more because of their rugby league dominated season.
Brisbane get less now than what they did last year, because of the 3 flags in a row.

I'm just wondering how different AFL is to footie/rugby in terms of rules and everything. A brief explanation from one of our Aussies here will be very much appreciated.

I dont imagine you've seen an Aussie rules game, It's quite hard to explain through text but i'll give it a shot

You have two teams of 22 players but only 18 can be on the field at any time, the other 4 are reserves which you can rotate at any time throughout the match.
The playing field is roughly two hundred meters long with four big sticks at either end, called Goals the two sticks in the middle are taller than the two on the outside, If the ball is kicked in between the middle posts the kicking team gets 6 points, but if you "MISS" and get it between one of the smaller posts and the larger one it becomes a one point "Behind" to the kicking team.

Once a player has possession of the ball which he can either pick up off the ground or "Mark" (catch on the full) from another players kick, he can choose to either "Play on" or kick or handpass to another player anywhere within his ability to do so.
However a player in possession of the ball must only be allowed to run 15 meters before bouncing the ball on the ground or passing it off (either handpass or by kicking it) or getting tackled by an opposition player and being depossessed by him in a manner thats within the rules, (no pushing him in the back no tripping etc) the tackle must be below shoulder height and above waist height and the player with the ball must try to get rid of it before the umpire blows his whistle and calling holding the ball.

At either end of the ground theres a 50 meter arch going from one side of the ground to the other (left to right, not from end to end) and in the middle there is a centre square and the ruck circle, before the game and after a goal the ball is bounced in the middle of the ground so as two players (Ruckman) can jump and tap the ball to their midfield players who then pass off to their forwards who then kick the goals, whislt the defence tries to stop them and take the ball up the other end fo the field to get hte ball to their forwards so they can kick the goal.

I'm not hte best at explainin stuff, but I hope that gives you a fairer idea, of whats going on, or you could go to some australian rules forums and learn from there, I'll post some helpful links and stuff for you.

The portadelaide football club are the reigning premiers we had to beat the best team in the history of the AFL (Australian Football League) to win it.
No mean feat I assure you.

Now you're talking ACF, that's cleared up a lot, Ican now understand the games I've seen in the past. I've got s 'footie' at home which I haven't pumped up yet. Are they still red in colour?

Also, I've been told I should support the 'Cats' - a good thing or a bad thing?

ACL, sorry but it isn't. In 1991, Port Adelaide attempted to get the Port MAGPIES into the AFL but were unsuccessful. So, in 1996, a total new franchise was launched to try and get another Port side in, this time the Power. Port POWER were clear from the start that this is a totally different franchise and was uttered after the Grand Final. That is probably why there was a bit of controversy when Port Power wore the Port Magpies strip in a heritage game a couple of years ago.

So technically they are totally different franchises, but you'll find most Port Magpies supporters are Port Power supporters. And i reckon its a better game than footy!!

TTFC, an Aussie rules football is Red and you probably should jump on the Cats as last year they were a goal away from a grand final. This year, with key forward Brad Ottens coming to Geelong, they should challenge for a grand final berth. So a good thing..
