The Port Adelaide club have two sides, The Port Adelaide Magpies who reside in the SANFL (South Australian National Football League) and the Port Adelaide Power who play in the so called national competition the AFL (Australian Football League) We were the first team to put forward an idea to the SANFL that maybe Port should go to the AFL which is a better comp (We were dominating at the time) into the national competition, however because so many people are jealous of Port Adelaides success as a football team in South Australia they opposed the idea and put forth a team representing all of South Australia be allowed to go in first, this all happened in 1991 this team to be called the Adelaide Crows eventually embarrassed my once proud state.
It was coached by blokes who had no idea right up to 1997 and 1998 when they finally got a coach that could coach and they won two premierships in each of those years, Blighty as he's known jumped ship soon thereafter because he knew they fluked it, and hasnt coached since. (although thinking of a come back)
In 1997 the Port Adelaide Magpies still wanted to enter a team into the AFL and seeing as the crows were poo,, the AFL in probably the wisest decision theyve ever had let Port enter, but with some conditions. In the first 3 years Port would have to pay $120,000 a year for their AFL license they also had disadvantages in draft selections, however Port far from disgraced themselves finishing 10th or somethin. (not sure what it is now)
Port Adelaide Magpies and Port Adelaide Power are the same club Paoli we've just had a name change to satisfy Eddie McGuire and his mates at Collingwood, (even though we had the magpie guernsey first) thats the only difference apart from adding Teal to the black and white that magpies are
Port Adelaide won their first premiership last year against the best team in history, guess that says something about who the best team is now eh?

O and one more thing Paoli, lol the cats came to SA and got smashed by the power at FootyPark in the prelim.
And Ottens is crap. lol

ACL, there's a lot of Port Power supporters who would disagree with you on this - those that never supported Port Adelaide in the SANFL (and never will), but got behind an underdog in the national comp and/or were frustrated with the hype surrounding the underperforming Crows in Adelaide. To these supporters, the idea that the Port Magpies and the Power are the same team is inconceivable. They'll begrudgingly accept mutual roots at best. I suspect any moves to bring the two clubs closer together would be strongly opposed by these supporters

Everytime I'm about to go to Australia I go thinking that Australians speak English (so communication wouldn't be a problem) but half way through the trip I'm convinced that Aussies don't speak English, they speak Australian
And thanks for the links and the shot at explanation, that was a real help. I'm planning to write to John Dykes (host of a show called Football Focus at ESPNStar Sports) they claim they talk about every kind of football that exists except Aussie Rules, I'll email them and ask them why not Aussie Rules. As much as I can understand reading the rules, there really is no substitute to actually watching some of it on telly. I have seen some very brief clippings on Super Sport, but nothing else. ESPN gives no coverage of it what so ever.
