My recollection is that Gooch was always likely to return to the side, and the choice came down to one of Tim Robinson and Fowler for his opening partner in that summers Ashes. I think Fowler had a poor one-day series and lost out. Against one of the poorest Australian sides in memory, all the England batsmen filled their boots as we regained the Ashes, with Richard Ellison playing a starring role.

Who am I :-

I'm an outspoken northern allrounder who was very young when I started Test Cricket, and quite old when I finished it. I'm and all-rounder good enough to play for England with either discipline who was pushed out of my first county after various rows with the commitee. I became quite a legend down in the west county and I once kept wicket in a first class game without gloves! Brave, outspoken, arrogant - but quite good really!

ooooh Paoli - you fell into my little trap. I tried to make the clue ambiguous so that somone might think of Both, but I'm afraid that's incorrect. I think this fella was 45 when he made his last test appearance.

Nothing wrong at all, some interesting clues there

I guess Kapil Dev and his exploits are so well-known that any question involving him would be easy to answer, unless the question relied on some fairly obscure clues. Also, five clues about someone like Kapil is probably too many, I had him at the second.
