Talk about: Pop Music!!!

I'm getting a little tired of arguing on other sections of the forum so I thought I'd start a nice thread where we can simply just discuss what sort of music we like. But I'd prefer to concentrate on the question:

Which album is the best ever?

I saw a TV show (one of those channel 4 top 100) a few weeks ago where OK Computer by Radiohead was voted number 1. Maybe you are a Sgt. Pepper fan or prefer Nevermind by Nirvana. This thread is dedicated to your favorite ever albums.

Supertramp's 'Crime of the Century' was pretty good, as was Duran Duran's 'Big Thing' - also, Eurthymics soundtrack to '1984' was excellent.

I suppose if I had to pick a standout winner, it would be - The Cult 'Electric'

Saw on the news the other day that "The crazy frog song" was number one in the English charts and found myself thinking "HAS ENGLISH YOUTH ALL GONE BARKING MAD!!!"
But back on the thread, i am still stuck in the 80's and would have to say Dire Straits "Brothers in arms" would have to be my all time fave.
Teatime fatcats choice of Cult's "Electric" was a classic too i must say

"The Sun is Often Out" by the Longpigs. An overlooked classic. The Beatles, in my opinion, are massively overrated. The Rolling Stones were much more innovative in my opinion and knocked out some classic tunes with killer hooks. The Stones' "Exile on Main Street" is one of their best.

To be honest, it does depend on what you define as the best album of all time. The most influential, for example, would be very different from the most popular, or even the album with the best songs on it overall. Most albums usually have a duff track. "OK Computer" for example, has the very annoying "Fitter, Happier" and thus should, in my opinion, be rated below "The Bends" on which every song is fantastic.

Stones v The Beatles. Now there's a subject. We'll never get agreement on that one. For what it's worth, I'm a Beatles man myself.

Albums that have taken me over the years

Tea For the Tillerman - Cat Stevens
Rattus Norvegicus - The Stranglers
The Kick Inside - Kate Bush
First Last and Always - Sisters of Mercy
The Joshua Tree - U2 (Sorry - boring I know)
VU and Nico - Velvet Underground
Love - The Cult

Good God; Supertramp? "Bloody Well Right" is an awfully good song. Didn't you prefer Even in the Quietest Moments though?

I've got some very good cover versions of Richard Strauss tone poems... I particularly like my Berlin Phil performances of Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel. Can't go far wrong with Beethoven's seventh symphony and Schubert's ninth. And if there's going to be a decent performance of Verdi's Requiem in London, I won't be far away from it. The Mozart Requiem is pretty far out too - got a Berlin Phil cover of that as well.

You can make up your own defintition of best, just go on what you feel to be the best.

Both Radiohead albums OK Computer and The Bends are ace, two of the best of my collection and both would probably appear in my top 20.

I'll agree with The Beatles. In fact they are possibly my most listened to band. I've never personally been convinced by the Rolling Stones, but they were obviously a band of high calibre.

I've no idea what is going on here. Richard Strauss tone poems??? Were they a good band?

I know absolutely nothing about classical music unfortunately.

Further to my earlier post, I was thinking that the albums I've listened to the most would probably be my favourite albums. Having to think a bit here, I'm guessing the following:

(1) Longpigs - The Sun is Often Out
(2) Blur - Parklife
(3) Radiohead - The Bends
(4) Pulp - His n Hers
(5) Crowded House - Recurring Dream
(6) Doves - The Last Broadcast
(8) Belle & Sebastian - The Boy with the Arab Strap
(9) Mo*ho*bish*o*pi - (eponymous)
(9) Puressence - Only Forever
(10) Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
(11) Super Furry Animals - Radiator
(12) Ash - 1977
(13) Radiohead - OK Computer
(14) Levellers - Zeitgeist
(15) Belle & Sebastian - If you're feeling sinister
(16) Doves - Lost Souls
(17) Wannadies - Yeah
(18) Jurassic 5 - Jurassic 5
(19) Electrasy - Beautiful Insane
(20) Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA

Now - that doesn't mean they are necessarily my favourite albums; in fact, most commonly I listen to mix tapes with only one song per artist on them; but that list kinda gives you my music taste. The thing is though, I listen to a lot of 60s and 70s stuff, but not usually albums - but singles (taken from old 45s) are where I usually take that sort of stuff from.
