Olympics

Who will win the vote to host the 2012 summer Olympics games?

Currently the odds are as follows:

Paris : 1-4 (fav)
London : 11-4
New York : 25-1
Madrid : 14-1
Moscow : 50-1.

Also do the English posters on this forum want the Olympics to come to London, or not? Why?

I'd love to see England win it... I've got my money on Paris though.

Paris should win it. London hasn't got the stadia or the travel infrastructure and I wouldn't like to put money on it's completion on time or on budget - the tax payer's paying for enough at the moment without another public sector project going way over budget (Millennium Dome anyone??).

Have you looked at the IOC technical review committee's report NE? There is high praise for London's bid.

Here

I've heard the praise and there's no doubt it would be wonderful, and I would like to see England get it. However, if I were on the IOC panel and completely neutral I'd probably be giving it to Paris.

I have been following the bid process and although agreeing with you that Paris is the best bid I think London is in with a real chance.

Two reasons behind why I think that: 1) historically the candidate city that is in second place in the run-up to the decision wins (see the gamesbid link below for the details behind this trusism) 2) a deal is being struck between Madrid and London to promote each other to their supporters in the IOC if they are out of the race.

The decision is being broadcast on Wednesday at 12:15 pm on BBC1 - oooh exciting!

Don't mind London getting it as long as it's Londoners who pay for it,because i can honestly say i'm never going to go to watch Cycling or Swimming in London so why should i pay for it.The only sporting arenas i will visit will be Lords,The Oval,Brisbane Road and Underhill.Hopefully in the future i will get the chance to go to the wonderful Griffin Park whilst following Shrewsbury Town.

I want Paris to have it. It's too much hassle! Every Olympics has to be bigger and better than the previous, plus we have to pay for the thing.

Let the French have something they can be proud of for once in history!

What I want to know is how can the French afford the Olympics when they can't even afford to subsidise their own farmers and take £4 billion a year from the EU? Jacques Chirac said that the only thing Britain has given to european farming is BSE. Has he seen the figures?
