What Peter Jackson did was capture the essence and spirit of the book, and while elements of the book were changed or disgaurder, he remained true to the central themes of the book. A commendable piece of work. I would also highly recommend an early Peter Jackson film, 'Heavenly Creatures' very strongly - it was a small film, but showed that there was more to him than gory horror films. But that's for the movie thread, I guess...

The mouth of Sauron was totally gross. But then, that's what one would expect Sauron's lieutenant to be like. It would have been great if everything related to the Paths of the Dead was included in the normal version. PS: Tolkien categorically stated that his book was not a trilogy and he did all he could to persuade his publisher from publishing LOTR in three parts. All to no avail...
