Unfortunately Alison, Mongoose is taking one of my ideas and thinking it's his here, again . I'm sorry, but half stars are out of the question on this thread! If you would like to rate books with other rating systems (e.g. half-stars, percentages, something out of ten) please start a new one!

For clarity I shall show you how to use the intricate star-rating system:

One star-rating = *

Two star-rating = **

Three star-rating = ***

Four star-rating = ****

Five star-rating = *****

One-star rating is the lowest, reserved for terrible books. Five-star rating is the highest, reserved for the very best books! I mean, what is half a star anyway?

Gradation! Five options for grading a book just isn't enough I'm afraid.

It's good enough for me! We have to put a limit somewhere. If I allow you half-stars then someone will want quarter-stars and eighths of a star, how could I deny them if I haven't you. Before we know it we will be marking books out of 23,685,295!

Then what will you say! Let me guess: "23,685,295 options for grading a book just isn't enough I'm afraid."

We have to have a limit and five is it!

Oh well, in that case I just won't be able to grade it, or any other book, for you then.

You really love these ratings, Lemming...

I'd give Half Blood Prince a ****, although I do agree with Alison that with a 5 star rating, you don't have much of a choice. I hope this makes you happy.

By the way, what's with "that "King of the Ring!" trilogy"? Lord of the Rings is surely one of the best fantasy series out there. Yes, the English is old and the narrative can be boring at times, but overall, Tolkien created (through his own imagination) a fascinating world.

Thanks for your rating! You do get FIVE choices! I bet you don't even have 5 different cereals at your breakfast table each morning. Five choices are sufficient enough to provide a good indication of what you thought of the book.

I love Lord of the Rings. I just used that in the answers for comedy value, that's all. Was it funny?

The original question is simply "Will you buy the Harry Potter book?" NOT "Do you prefer Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings?".

I have read the books and they are very good,(say ****) but to be honest I think the films were better, because Tolkin couldn't resist over-egging the pudding at times - i.e. what was the point of Tom Bombadil or the Scorching of the Shire? Peter Jackson did a first rate job of editing the books down into the screenplays, IMO.

Welcome!

We get ONLY five choices, Lemming. That's nothing. I eat seven different cereals every morning!

I did understand that but was just concerned if you were degrading my favourite book...!

I find it very hard to choose between the two but I can very well understand your viewpoint, Kirsty.

I too greatly admire PJ's work. He did a magnificent job against all odds. For nearly 50 years, nearly all Tolkien fans were of the opinion that converting such a huge work into a film would be impossible. But that man put in a lot of effort. I believe that he, along with WETA, worked for around seven years on these movies! A commendable effort in every way.
