I'm sort of all for that. Zero tolerance I say when it comes to crime, that doesn't mean shooting all criminals, but bigger prison sentances and shooting when neccessary. You simply - quite publicly - give future criminals a sense of the risks they face and "take no prisoners" when required. Zero tolerance.

As for all policemen carrying firearms. The tricky thing is that then criminals arm themselves and therefore will have weapons and hence are in a position to use them. I don't want to get off topic with this thread, but a similar example is the debate on whether house-owners can attack and possibly kill burgulars legally. Burgulars will arms themselves and enter houses expecting trouble, ready with a firearm or knife themselves. The same applies for criminals expecting to possibly encounter armed-police, they will fill their pockets with guns, and if they have guns on them anything can happen to any law-abiding victim in the vicinity of the criminal/police.

In my book, taking it from cricket. If the police take the threat serious enough to shoot amd kill the person then its like a batsmen taking a risk. If it comes off he is a hero. If not he will be hounded for taking the shot.

I would prefer the person dead than other people taken out by his actions.

If the person was innocent - why the hell run.

"He said that a man was carrying a rucksack and the rucksack suddenly exploded. It was a minor explosion but enough to blow open the rucksack," McCracken said. "The man then made an exclamation as if something had gone wrong. At that point everyone rushed from the carriage."
Blows up a rucksack, runs away from police and has copper wires coming out of his t-shirt. Sounds like a good reason to shoot the guy.

Circumstantial at best - surely. Sorry - been living in America to long

Definitely. As I said, they can't take chances on how his rucksack could be detonated, as soon as they restrain him he could press a button in his mouth or something stupid to blow everyone up. It may be detonated by someone else nearby, but at least killing the actual guy reduces the chance of him choosing to detonate.

Now the police are saying the man killed was not connected to the bombing:

Yes, the man was innocent. Why did he not stop for the cops? He kind of shot himself in the foot, pardon the pun, but Scotland Yard will have a bit to answer for.

A possibility I suppose, but I guess he didn't look as though he was running to catch a train. I heard on-lookers say that he was sprinting from the police.

Whether he was connected to the bombings or not, if policemen ask me to stop, I stop! If they have a gun in their hand, I stop quicker.

Sounds like an unfortunate event, but I'm not going to blame the police. They are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

This incident is what i was worried about though. An innocent person getting caught up in it and ending up dead. There will be some serious questions asked by the dogooders in this country after this.
