Fleming ousted

Well, the worst kept secret in NZ cricket has just been confirmed... Fleming has been replaced by Vettori as captain in all forms of the game. Perhaps a consequence Flem's retired from ODI's - though of course he'd handed over the captaincy at the end of the World Cup.

So here's me starting a bit of a pool, a chocolate fish to the winner! When will Flem retire from Tests?

I notice that the last test of NZ's winter tour to the UK is at Trent Bridge... convenient, given Flem's Notts connection, very convenient. I'm going on the record and saying that (selection/injury allowing) that test will be Flem's last.

Retirement a la Cairns.

What's to say he won't have lost form and been dropped by then? A poor run of form in the Summer games could see him 'do an Astle' and retire in abject disappointment.

Not too sure if this was the best move or not. I noticed that 'know it all' Millmow was in the Dominion Post again criticising Fleming's captaincy in recent years. Certain other media outlets have said, however, that Fleming's inspiring captaincy was being reined in by Bracewell (their words, not mine), so I think Millmow's criticism is wholly unfair on that basis.

I've not been entirely convinced by Vettori as captain to date; though I hope he goes well. It's amazing how the NZ media expects the Black Caps to be as successful as the All Blacks, and it might not take very long before Millmow is pointing out more than a few flaws in Vettori's captaincy.

Overall the media are to negative about cricket in this country third in odi's is a damn good acheivemnet considering our player depth and population.
The test rankign should be higher but we haven't played muhc five day cricket the last couple of years.
I'm picking Flems will retire after England tour here this summer, he's not resigned for county cricket next year.

O and while Kenya were woeful it was good to see the team do well tonight in thier first 20/20 game after a bad warm-up. Bring on Sri lanka.

yeah, I tried to cover myself against 'retirement a la Astle' (or should that be 'Astle la vista'...) with the selection/injury comment. It is always better to see player go on their terms.

I was also of the understanding that Flem had not renewed his contract with Notts. In the UK press this was put down to his limited availability because of the NZ tour (form/fitness allowing) and that counties are only allowed one overseas player next season.

I wonder if Flem has a Welsh grandma...

That would be very convenient for Notts! (Once he's retired from Test cricket he can probablty play as a Kolpaker anyway!!)

It would be good to see him sign off at Trent Bridge just as Chris Cairns did.

Well according to Mr Milmow it is Fleming's intention at least to keep playing until the end of the tour to England.

He's also quoted as saying that the uncertainty was affecting his form for Notts - which is understandable. Apparently Fleming found out three weeks ago, and he's obviously reconciled himself with the fact given his form since...

I personally feel he can't be too disappointed with the circumstances of his 'dismissal' given the way in which he attained the captaincy in the first place (something I'm claiming personal involvement in...).
