Second test: pressure is on.

So.. in 29 overs to lunch (lesson to England and WI there) the NZ bowlers have contained the SA batsmen but failed to make the breakthrough they would have sought with the new ball. Restricting Smith to 2 boundaries of 38 balls is some feat... and just 82 runs off the session (including 4 extras) suggests that someone is getting something right... but that zero in the wickets column is a concern.

Not got any pitch reports yet... but with Kirsten and Kallis still to come... SA look to be in pole position.

I haven't seen a pitch report either, Rachael, but I would be happy for England's openers to bat like this more often. I'm a big believer in the openers seeing off the new ball and building a platform to take the pressure off the middle-order batsmen who are expected to make big scores. With Kallis in such good form, things are looking ominous for NZ that the SA batsmen are still there. Without a pitch report, it's hard to know how effective NZ will be with the soft ball after Lunch.

Looks like the first day was South Africa's... but with NZ doing a good job of containment. Day 2, however, seems to be going entirely the way of NZ. Kallis has blown his first chance to match Bradman's feat of six centuries: looks like there will be a second innings opportunity... but looking a tough ask.

From cricinfo: Lunch on the second day at Auckland. The morning session completely belonged to New Zealand with only 46 runs added for 5 wickets. Great fightback by New Zealand and a few loose shots from the SOuth African batsmen. Great bowling from Chris Martin who has figures of 4 for 72.

Rachael, I just saw the scorecard and SA lost 5 wickets in today's morning session. Despite that, the fact remains that SA batted for 4 sessions and still have wickets in hand. I can't see them losing unless they collapse in their second innings. NZ need to make 600 now and bowl SA out quickly to win.
