Champions' Trophy

OK - time to reveal just how occasional a fan I really am. What is this Champions' Trophy thing which is happening at the end of the summer? Is it new? Why do we need it given that we have a World Cup one-day competition every four years anyway? Is anyone taking part who would not be in the World Cup? Thanks for any information, which will be gratefully received by one who is sufficiently prejudiced against the one-day game to believe that the World Cup itself is pretty worthless.

Champions trophy

Yes This is a bit confusing Occassional fan

At first I thought that the ICC intercontinental cup trophy being played at the moment was part of this tournament but now I'm not so sure.
The ICC continental cup is a chance for the minnows in the cricketing world to play each other, and the following teams are in it

Nepal
Namibia
Kenya

Scotland
Holland
Ireland

Canada
Usa
Bermuda
Which seems ok if it gives those minnows a chance to earn money and improve their games.

But the Champion's trophy , being played in the UK in September is a different thing. The Champions trophy ;The Champion's Trophy, also known as the ICC Knockout Cup, is held every two years in between World Cups. In the Champion's Trophy, a single loss eliminates a team from the tournament.

I don't know who's in it this time, or why it happens (other than money/impetus for developing nations.)

ICC Champions Trophy England 2004 (10-25 September)

The countdown to the ICC Champions Trophy 2004 - cricket's major event alongside the ICC Cricket World Cup - has officially begun following the tournament launch in London.

The world's best cricketers will gather in England in September to compete in the ICC Champions Trophy, an event which brings together the top cricket nations for 15 matches in 16 days at three of England's leading venues - The Oval, Edgbaston and Hampshire's Rose Bowl.

It is the only time outside the ICC World Cup that the leading international teams will come together in the one event to test their form and progress against each other.

England will host the ICC Champions Trophy (10-25 September) for the first time, with the ICC's 10 Full Member countries joined by Kenya and the USA in the 12-team competition which offers more than US$500,000 for the tournament winner.

The format of the competition divides competing teams into four groups of three based on their official One-Day International ranking on 1 December 2003, with the winners of each group progressing to straight knockout semi-finals and final.

Tickets are now available but selling fast for this major event
