Vaughan's absence - blessing in disguise??

With captain marvel missing the match today, is it the opportunity to really sort the batting line up out....or will they simply pick Bell and stick him in at 3 as a like for like replacement.

I'm not upset about it at all and it will give us a better chance of reaching our total in time as we put them into bat first. Solanki taking his place is a good thing and i suppose Tresco will make him No. 3 because hes used to opening with him and so has more faith in him than Vaughan does. Then Collingwood 4, Flintoff 5 and Pietersen 6 although that can change depending on performance!

Tremlett retains his place ahead of Lewis - very interesting.

Solanki has got the dig.

I love MPV's game. I simply can't believe that he has such a poor ODI record. But he does. There is pressure on his place from other bats coming through, and I have to face it - if he wasn't the captain, he'd have been dropped by now. My own feeling is that there are two possibilities for MPV and ENG over the next 12 months:- firstly, he and Colly both develop thier bowling so that, in tandem, they can reliably handle 10 overs in most matches (so he can excuse his lack of runs through being an allrounder!). Secondly, Tres takes the captaincy and MPV hangs up his pyjamas.

Unhappy Thats how bad its got!

I think I have always been the most pro-MPV in all situations on this entire message board. It shows just how badly he has underperformed in ODI's that I feel no choice but to post the above!

MPV is in a similar position to Nas 3 years ago. He has never really shone in ODIs, and at the moment he's not scoring particularly quickly. For a guy with all the shots, he seems strangely limited in the one-day game. One theory is that he is at his best when having played himself in a bit more. Tresco can score from ball one, and guys like Freddie can hit out so spectacularly later in their innings that it doesn't matter if they are 20 from 40 if they end up getting 80-odd at more than a run a ball. But I think Vaughan may feel the pressure of getting on with it a bit more. That's why he ends up looking crap and getting out. Just a theory. Anyone more informed is free to develop/rubbish the theory at will, as I have seen precious little cricket so far this summer.

Hav'nt we been over this before? Will we still be talking about it in 12 months time? I would say that this situation will never go away as long as Vaughan is captain of the ODI team

Seamer, you have successfully located the button. Other candidates are waiting in the wings. I think they will be waiting in the wings for a while though, as there seems to be no desire among the management to remove Vaughan from the ODI team. It's always a tricky one when the captain is struggling for the form that would guarantee his place. I remember similar discussions about Nasser in the ODIs, and Mark Taylor when he went through his awful year or so with the bat as Aus skipper.

Vaughan will always score points on a: continuity from tests b: Damn good captain, d: spin option. However, ODI wise - his batting is pants.

Tresco, one of the best ODI bats in the world, as a captain seems to have al the guile and cunning of Mr Bean. Drop crusher vaughan (noW he'll get a 50 next time he plays - hw always does) and give the ODI captaincy to Strauss.
