Bangladesh v Australia - 25 June - Old Trafford

How on earth did Bangladesh manage to throw this match away in such spectacular style? Going from 113-2 to 139 all out in just eleven overs really is inexcusable. Were the Aussies that good today, or did the Bangladeshis just throw it away as it sounds to me on the radio? Something must have gone wrong as well for them to be all out in 35 overs.

Because they haven't got the batsmen is the obvious answer. The other thing is they got caught between two stools. When they lose three/ four wickets in with 25 overs left what do they do? Bat out the fifty overs possibly at three an over or play shots with the chance of losing wickets.
When it comes down to it besides Ashraful there are bunch of county batsmen who would get in the Bangledesh side. There are proably one or two not in their county side who might get in the Bangledesh side. If you don't have the ability to keep your wicket let alone get the scoring rate moving we can expect more collapses like this for a while until Bangledesh gain more experience.

The Aussie bowling was pretty average. Bad shots really.

I agree that it was poor shot selection, but it is a bit hard to say if Hogg and Symonds were average bowlers. The Bangledishi batsmen did'nt give us a chance to find out.

I'm not quite sure when you should make the decision, John, but my instinct says that you should bat out your overs for whatever you can get. The Duckworth-Lewis formula uses the concept of "resources", which are basically batsmen and overs. If the batsmen aren't all that special, then surely you should be aiming to get the most out of the other resource? Even at three an over, Bangladesh "threw away" 45 runs today by shortening their innings. Probably not enough to make a difference in the end in terms of this match result, but it could sometimes make the difference between a match and no contest, surely?

Your proably right bat the overs out. But the crowds aren't use to seeing sides nudging singles for the final 25 overs. It sort of looks defeatist. There is no possiblity of us winning we will get some batting practice.

Bill Frindall possibly clutching at straws?

"One interesting thing about this match is that no bowler on either side has bowled a second spell." He really is priceless, isn't he?
