Bat 2nd

England under Vaughan have a significantly better chance of winning if they chase:

 England under Vaughan in ODIs
................ Matches Win/Loss Win %
Batting first 21 7/12 33.33
Batting second 22 17/3 67.27

Overall in England (since Jan 2000) Teams batting second have won 49 times compared with 23 teams winnig when settinig a target.

Stats eh!

I think for D/N matches the stats are in favour of the team batting first because of the extra movement believed by Botham et al to occur under lights. I don't have any stats to back that up though.

For England under Vaughan as captain England has played 12 Day Night games;

Played Win/Loss Tie No Result
12 4/5 1 2

6 1/4 1 0 Batting First
6 3/1 0 2 Batting Second

Every time Vaughan has one the toss (4 times in day night games) he has elected to bat first. This may explain why England put Australia in first.

Although when you look at the last 50 games played as Day Night games by England under any Captain the results are as follows;

Played Win/Loss Tie No Result
50 17/29 1 3
28 12/15 1 0 Batting First
22 5 /14 0 3 Batting Second

Interesting, looks like Vaughan is a good captain in gaining a win batting second in a day night game. While historically England is much better at batting first

I believe the statistics show that day/night matches in England are more easily won batting first. Although I can't find any statistics to confirm that, I've heard some commentator say it.

Vaughan went through a period as captain where England couldn't win a match without chasing, I'm going to try and find that period. He wouldn't even bat first given good conditions.

I'll get back to you with this period, if and when I find it.

During the period June 2003 to September 2004 (15 months), ODI's featuring England (27 matches, including 4 abandoned matches) were won only by the chasing team. Thus meaning that England won every match (13 of them) in which they chased and lost every match (10) in which they defended their total.

During this time I think Vaughan developed a bit of a complex and I'm not sure he would have actually ever batted first if he won the toss.
