Cricket under a roof?

Do you think that cricket grounds will be built with a roof(if high enough of course) and is the roof the future of one-day games?

The ICC Super Series one dayers were played at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne - it has a roof which even got hit by a shot from (I think) Mike Hussey. See a report about the ground here: http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/austr...ry/221031.html

I did watch that series, I think it would be useful if rain intervened but it would have to be quite high wouldn't it?

Indeed it would have to be high, but like the article said it drains the natural colour of the game and makes it seem like a canned good.

It would be a good idea to keep the roof open when a game begins, and only close it if it rained. Then it could be turned into a very useful feature . Otherwise, no use.

What about using one in the English winter, say playing all of the one dayers there so England had less of a stressful home series and could possibly play another?

Actually, with intelligent use of the air conditioning system (blasting warm, damp air from one end and cold, dry air from the other end), you could generate carefully controlled frontal systems and make rain storms to order. Could be open to abuse, I guess.

(This idea occurred to me because it actually happened to me once in a hotel room near Mombasa. Cold aircon over the head of the bed, warm air off the Indian Ocean coming in through the poorly sealed louvre windows at the foot of the bed, and I had rain falling on my feet. And my own personal cloud just below the ceiling.)

Judging by the rates at that hotel, yes!

The problem with playing in winter is the light, not many hours available for a days play, and also on an English winters day, the light seems to be dim.

Even artificial light would not alter this, because the two sorts of light, I doubt would mix.
