So I take it no wicket keeper vote will take place. If it was suggested that Gilchrist would not keep wicket, I wonder if he would still have been peoples' preferred pick.

Why do you think so, apart from being a very good batsman, he is also a very good wicket-keeper, and good enough to be in an all time xi.

I'm not arguing whether he is not good enough to be in an all-time XI. He is clearly the leading contender for the one specialist WK position (arguably the only position that must be filled). My issue is that the odds were stacked in his favour for selection. As a player who probably must be in the XI, he was chosen as the opening batsman (a role I think he is far from the best of all-time) simply because he would be most people's WK.

If the WK role was not a specialist position, I seriously doubt whether he would feature here. He certainly is a worse opening player than Hayden for example.

I guess you are right, their are other players who are better openers them him. And the reason he is out their is because he is a wicket keeper.
