Fielders attempting two run outs in a ball.

YouTube - Best cricket runout (2 runouts in 1 ball)

Well, you can't get two wickets off one ball, so I guess they were really going for one or the other. Good bit of thinking really.

There's a link on that same page to the underarm bowling incident in Melbourne in - what? 1981? - and it's actually the first time I've ever seen it. Richie Benaud's editorial ("the most disgraceful thing I have ever seen on a cricket field") seems to me to be bang on the money.

YouTube - Most disgraceful moment in the history of cricket

Watch more closely: the wicket-keeper takes the ball but doesn't break the stumps. He then effects a run out the other end.

My guess: with both batsmen stranded (or with the better batsman looking like being run out) the lesser batsman decided to sacrifice himself by running towards the wicket-keeper... who responded by ensuring the better batsman was out.

Which actually makes it an even cleverer play. Wicket keeper thinks hard, tries to run out the batsman at the bowler's end, fielder at that end is not sure he made it so sends the ball back to the wicket keeper who puts the wicket down at his end just to be sure of getting one or the other.

Yes, thats a smart bit of cricket. Good thinking....though I thought the keeper took a big chance in trowing the ball to the other end. It could have been tight. Had he fielder not gathered it cleanly, it would have looked quite stupid. But they did it pretty well in the end.

Nice clip for posterity. Am I right in thinking that the moment the first run out took place (close as it was), the ball is dead and so whatever happens next is irrelevant?

There was only one run out though N. the keeper never broke the stumps or removed the bails.

Very smart play from him though.
