Javed's a must for me here. There was a period in 1987 when he seemed to get at least a fifty everytime he came into bat. I know everyone talks about Bevan and Hussey, but was there ever a better chaser than Javed? His career did go on too long (well over years). He should have retired after the tour of England in 1992 because he was really past it with his bad back.

Although he batted most of his career at 3 (like Ponting I suppose), I would like to have considered Dean Jones for a place in the team at 4. I certainly think Jones is the best one day batsman the Aussies have produced.

Surely i think australia have better batsmen than jones. Ponting, hayden, Hussey come to mind straight away. May be not hussey. But surely Ponting or hayden.

Why surely? Jones was head and shoulders above anything Australia had in their side throughout the late 80s early 90s and was clearly the leading limited overs player in the world in the early 90s.

I've voted Lara and Kallis. Lara, because as I've said previously he's the greatest batsman I've ever seen and can shred the bowling at any stage of the innings. Kallis, because he's a great accumulator of runs (averaging 45 in ODIs) who'd make an excellent foil for any of Richards, Tendulkar and Gilchrist. On top of this, he's a good slipper and a good bowler who can be relied upon for making the needed breakthrough.

But I am surprised that Dean Jones hasn't been listed.

Why Hayden? He couldn't break into the Australian team while Mark Waugh held the opening slot, and incidentally the bowling was of a much higher standard in Junior's time than in Hayden's. So as well as Hayden has done since being recalled, I wouldn't have him ahead of either Waugh or Gilchrist as an opener in my Greatest Australian XI.

I think not making it to the team was more on selectors than himself as the openers were themselves playing really well for australia.
