New Zealand v Windies 4th ODI

Should be an interesting game. NZ have already won the series so will be experimenting a bit today. Windies are playing for pride now and will want to go into the test series with a win or 2 under there belts. Interesting to note that out of the last 7 games between the two sides NZ has won 6 of them with one no result.

It appears that the fourth ODI will be not be interesting at all. As I write this, after 15 over NZ are 94/0 after being sent in to bat. Unless there is a batting collapse, it is very difficult for NZ to lose from here.

After an Astle century to boost New Zealand's score to 324-6 the West Indies fell short of the total despite a stable century from Morton (110 off 155 balls). Mills being the pick of the bowlers on return with 3-45 from his 10 overs. Well done New Zealands and I can't see anything less than a white wash from them to be honest.

I never thought I'd hear anyone say that

Seriously though, the Windies have underperformed against even my low expectations. Morton has scored well, but far too slowly. The Windies have failed to stay in the game when they've done the damage. In the second ODI, they had the Kiwis beaten but let them escape, today no one could help Fidel Edwards who bowled SUPERBLY and was the real pick of the bowlers on display. Gayle and Chanderpaul have got out to some shocking shots. (Chanderpaul was bowled between his legs attempting a heave in the first ODI, Gayle shouldered arms to a straight one today). The support bowlers for the Windies have been WOEFUL. Deighton Butler was totally taken to the cleaners today by Fleming, Astle and Vincent and although Dwayne Smith has caused some problems, he just hasn't been consistent enough.

West Indies team

This West Indies team dont look like a time that is improving. Rather they seem like a stagnant side. The century by Runako Morton can be termed average, because he had no intention of going for the target. Rather, all he was focussed of, was his hundred. It has become commonplace to see the West Indies team touring countries and getting hammered badly in every game. The West Indies should tour teams like Bangladesh to get some positive results.

I think one player trying to bat out the innings to give a stable platform for others to attack is a good option. However the only players who could do this well would be: Gayle, Sarwan and possibly Chanderpaul. Gayle is getting out far to early, Sarwan is on pretty good form and made quick runs but got run out, Chanderpaul is making few runs also. The West Indies are relying upon X amount of players too much and hopeful that others will chip in. Sadly the X don't seem to be making enough big scores.

I meant to say this earlier. The Kiwis had the luxury of resting Jamie How and James Franklin for the latest game (incidentally, Franklin scored 208 for State Wellington today against State Auckland!). Does this show that the Kiwis have pretty decent strength in depth?

They thrashed the West Indies today and could have had How or Ryder in for any of the top 6.
They have Jeetan Patel who's shown in this series that he can provide decent backup for Vettori (even if he's not in the same class with bat or ball)
And they've shown that even without Jacob Oram or Chris Cairns that they have enough decent seam bowlers in reserve to trouble teams.

Looks like the current rotation policy against the Windies will give them a decent sized squad of international class players for the World Cup. I can't see them winning, or even getting to the final; but I can see them causing some of the bigger teams some serious trouble!

Or alternatively, does this just show that the West Indies are sinking to new depths?

After watching the series so far i'd have to say that Bangladesh are a better one-day side than West Indies, which is something i never thought i'd say.
