| I think he does the right thing in walking. If he knows he has hit it then clearly he can not live with knowledge that he is in theory "cheating". Is it really cheating? is the question that would be then followed.
Gilchrist would be cheating himself; if he went on to make 100 he knows that he should not have had those runs and he would have a guilty conscience and could not live with himself. Cheating Australia to a possible victory or score that they should not have had?
For others it is the umpires decision as to whether he hit the ball, not the batsmen himself. Did he definitely hit the ball? Maybe he caught part of his body etc.
I think it is personal choice as to whether it is cheating or not but Gilchrist does the right thing in "his" mind which is what counts at the end of the day for him. If someone could live with knowlingly hit the ball and not walked then fair enough, it is their choice, they are lying to themselves.
