I have stuck this thread, it merits further discussion as the greatest ODI ever, and Gibbs crushing the nightmare of 1999.

I woke up this morning and saw this result on the news, I couldn't believe it. Has to be the greatest ODI off all time, and people say the format is getting boring.

Just wish we could get coverage down here in NZ.

Congratulations SA on an awe-inspiring run-chase

THEY HAVE DONE IT.... OH JOY THEY HAVE ACHIEVED THE IMPOSSIBLE... THE WORLD RECORD FOR MOST RUNS IN AN ODI WAS BROKEN BY AUSTRALIA AND THEN BY SOUTH AFRICA WHO UNBELIEVABLY HAVE CHASED IT TO SUCCESS!!! This is it... the greatest ever ODI....the highest ever chase.... the most unbelievable result... after watching the whole thing live i still cant believe myself!!!

"Ponting was angry at what has become a regular occurrence. "We can't defend totals," he said. "There was always a chance because we did it, but there is no way they should have scored that many runs." However, he told AAP it was "just an amazing day". "You just can't fathom the sort of batting that has taken place today," he said.

I only saw last few overs of the match ... i coudn't believe my eyes when i read Aus 434/4 ... and my eyes almost popped out when i saw SA just in touching distance of target! what a match! i can't help self pitying for having missed the greater part of action but hell ... Bahrain GP wasnt that bad either!

btw what was hall thinking when he hit that shot? I had the premonition that he is going to get out and he just did it. In the end I was praying Ntini wouldn't have to face a yorker and fortunately he didn't. most memorable match after that '99 semifinal.

Was this result a sign of things to come for Australia when Warne and McGrath are gone?

The Australian attack looks pretty thin without them.

Australia's problem is they have gone from having one attack to a totally different one in six months. Mainly in the pace bowling department most of the bowlers are inexperience and simply don't have the skills McGrath has to tie down one end so they go for runs at both ends.

By far the best One-Day International I've ever seen. 900 runs in 100 overs!!!

Full throttle cricket, making bowlers slaves! But why did Ponting persevere with Lewis. His career is done once and for all but sheesh, I still can't believe it.

That many runs. They did the impossible. It's always harder to chase such a score than to set it.

Contrary to Smiths comments prior to this match, I always thought SA were the chokers. This match proves they definately werent.
