Just as I was suggesting he appears adequate... he misses a catch and the screws up a routine stumping off Hoggard! The case for giving him the rest of this series to settle looks unanswerable: Fletcher needs to know if this level of incompetence is an abberation or par for the course.

Still... and encouraging day fopr Chris Read if he's been following the game :-)

Read needs to be in the ODI squad, I was always a big advocate for him leaving the tests to Jones (initially !) but always felt that he should be ion the ODIs. But again the batters arent up to the job and post a below par score. Not good.

Cricinfo scorecard broke down with India at 224/6 needing 11 off 34. I presume they've won by now?

Poor Jones, deserved a fifty and Strauss ran him out.

Cricinfo back online, India won with 2.4 overs to spare. 4-0 is hard to take.

He regularly does what Jones did today. My understanding, from a contact at the BBC, is that many county players rate him as one of the most dangerous One-Day batsmen around as he does score quickly and in unusual areas.

But if your face doesn't fit ............

Jones played very well today with the bat, with the tail and with India sensing a complete collapse. He was obviously suffering, with the heat (it is quite difficult to keep yourself well hydrated), but batted well despite this. He put a few bad balls away and then knocked the ball into gaps and, for most of the time, went along nicely at a run a ball not getting too carried away. If it wasn't for him, England might not have posted anything above 200, it's not as if Blackwell is ever going to stick around.

Jones has also kept pretty well in this tour. If he is to miss any matches in the remainder of this series, then I suppose Chris Read might deserve a go. His keeping will be fine, he is the best keeper. It will be interesting to see how he plays the Indian spinners (with the slog-sweep blatently), but it might pay off.

4-0 is the scoreline that England deserve to be in defecit to after the performances so far, just poor from the batsmen.

Keeper situation, why not just straight replace GO Jo with Read and leave Prior to open the batting?

Freddie needs to go home, none of this playing for pride. He's going to get his mandatory captain's month off and be short of any kind of match practice going into Sri Lanka staying in India.

A good all round performance from India, congratulations to them on winning the series.

Lets concentrate on what Blackwell can do; He can hit an explosive 30-40 when given the chance and I keep seeing people criticse him for getting these scores but just let him find his feet. I can't think of a player who gets consistent ODI scores over and over without having a few failures. Blackwell isn't that used to international level so hopefully he will adjust by the end of this series and looka good prospect for the world cup after bowling well, and maybe adding some runs with the bat

Prior's 10 innings without a fifty doesn't look very impressive. How long do you give him? Solanki, Bell and Shah never got such good runs. (Perhaps Fletcher has a fetish for semi-English wicketkeepers.)
