ICC Champions Trophy: England v West Indies

OK - it's a dead rubber, with the West Indies already through and England already out, but we ought to have a thread for the game nevertheless. And it's not necessarily without interest as we may get to see Flintoff bowl, according to the man himself at an earlier press conference. BBC report here.

Play commences at 1000BST.

I've all the interest left in the game cause of ONE of these two teams is visiting Pakistan next month. So all their progress till that tour would be closely monitored by me ....

In b.w Lara has won the toss and decided to test his batters first...

Windies 35/0 after 7.2 overs, Lewis and Anderson both going at about 5 an over and not much happening it seems. Collingwood to bat at 4 in our "chase", as stated by the man himself on Sky this morning. I would hope that means it is KP at 3, Colly at 4 and Freddie at 5 but I think the stupidity that saw him bat at 3 in the first place will continue...the lunatics are still in charge of the asylum.

The big interest in this game is the bowling of Lewis.. and it's looking good so far: his first four balls went for a few runs but the reason was not wides or pointless short balls.... he was pitching the ball up looking for swing (and in one case for a yorker) and did at least make the batsmen play. Since then his bowling reads as follows:
Code:
1.5	Lewis to Gayle, no run, fuller outside off stump, some swing there as Gayle shoulders arms
1.6	Lewis to Gayle, no run, full outside off stump, Gayle drives that hard to mid-off, who fumbles the stop

3.1	Lewis to Gayle, no run, good ball, lands on the seam outside off stump and shapes in, but Gayle shoulders arms and allows it to pass
3.2	Lewis to Gayle, 1 run, lands on that spot and moves in, Gayle opens the face and runs that past gully for one
3.3	Lewis to Chanderpaul, no run, a tad slower, theres that swing again, fuller on off stump and Chanderpul defends to mid-off
3.4	Lewis to Chanderpaul, no run, good ball, some lift too as Lewis gets this cutter to hit the same and leave him, beats him by a long way
3.5	Lewis to Chanderpaul, 1 wide, and then the man goes and does this, a rank ball well wide of the pads, geez
3.5	Lewis to Chanderpaul, no run, thats the way, fullish outside off stump and Chanderpaul is forced to defend to point
3.6	Lewis to Chanderpaul, no run, good length on the stumps, turned to midwicket

5.1	Lewis to Gayle, no run, short and wide and its crunched hard but Collingwood at backward point pulls off a fine save diving to his left
5.2	Lewis to Gayle, no run, straighter on the stumps and Gayle stands and defends back to him
5.3	Lewis to Gayle, no run, lands on off stump, he defends and gets an inside edge
5.4	Lewis to Gayle, no run, lands outside off stumps and seams away, Gayle is beaten
5.5	Lewis to Gayle, FOUR, short of a good length outside off stump, Gayle stands and drives through the line, times that well past mid-off and picks up four
5.6	Lewis to Gayle, no run, fuller outside off and swings in, Gayle drives but gets beaten, Read behind the stumps dives well to his right and counters the swing to collect it

7.1	Lewis to Chanderpaul, no run, full outside off stump, defended
7.2	Lewis to Chanderpaul, no run, lands outside off stump and seams away, left alone and Read collects
7.3	Lewis to Chanderpaul, no run, good one, that same corridor but this time it draws a tentative poke from Chanderpaul, who shuffles and plays a nothing shot
7.4	Lewis to Chanderpaul, no run, full on the stumps and Chanderpaul defends in typical awkward style
7.5	Lewis to Chanderpaul, no run, full and moving across him, Chanderpaul gets on top of it and defends with a straight bat
7.6	Lewis to Chanderpaul, OUT, gone! Lands around off stump and draws Chanderpaul into a shuffle and he falls over as he goes for his shot, misses everything and gets rapped on the pads in front of off stump, all appeal and Harper raises his finger after a thought, wicket maiden for Lewis
	S Chanderpaul lbw b Lewis 13 (22b 2x4 0x6) SR: 59.09

Lewis removes Chanderpaul and has bowled ok.

Makes you wonder why we have persisted with Harmison for so long.Great at tests but terrible in one day cricket.

So terrible in fact that he averaged 15 in the Natwest series last summer, tsk.

0-97 at Headingley v Sri Lanka says it all about him in one day cricket.

Also a career economy rate of over 5 an over is pathetic for your supposed best opening bowler, then again we pick Mahmood and his is worse than that so no wonder we keep getting gubbed.

Yet another solid start by West Indies. Gayle, the usual and good to see Bravo scoring some runs(32*) higher in the order. IMO, it's a wise move by Lara to try and test his abilities at no.3 before the WC because his talent was pretty much wasted in lower middle order.

1/92 after 19 O.

Lewis 10-1-35-1 and should have had Gayle out caught in his last over but Strauss didn't bother to move.Excellent spell just a shame we don't have another bowler capable of keeping it tight in a game.

For me Lewis should be the first bowler on the teamsheet for the World Cup and do what he has today and bowl his 10 overs straight through but i get the feeling he will be like Martin Bicknell and end his career criminally underused.

After relatively early departure of Chanderpaul and experimental yet proving successful trying of Bravo at one drop WI are played pretty nicely here and are looking well on course to score one of the rare 250 in their inning. Gayle has completed his 29th ODI fifty while Bravo just edged pass his 3rd such effort in a growing career.
