Talking Good umpires are rare in cricket

The real problem, per me, arises when the ball's swinging - then woe betide the batsman if the ball raps on his pads. And of course, it will when the ball's swinging and the bowler's decent, especially when the batsman's new at the crease. A lot of appeals, a lot of pressure applied on the batsman, and finally, there will be one occasion when the umpire will think that this time he is out, and will give the poor batsman out. The problem is, why do umpires bow down to persistent appealing? Why and whom are they so afraid of? They have got all the power in their hands, what is the pressure upon them? And why do they tend to favour the stronger teams? Invariably, it's a weak team which is at the receiving end of an umpire's wilfulness; I still recall very vividly the usual manner in which Andy Flower used to get out - wrong lbw decisions given by two umpires in particular, S Venkataraghavan and Dave Orchard. Both, along with Darrell Hair, by the way were quite specialists in giving poor decisions to Zimbabwe.

Each decision should be based on it's merits. When an umpire is basing it on the fact that there has been two or three similar appeals, then he is guessing. But we do not know what is going through there mind.

What I would like to get away from is accusing umpires or bias, or even incompetence, the fact is that even the best umpires make mistakes, but I would like to know individual decisions that you think were particularly awful.

More or less anything involving Nasser Hussain, never seen a batsman get so many bad decisions.

Thats true, Hussain had a run of about a year where he seemed to get either a shocker or an unplayable ball every knock.

Regarding umpires and LBW's you have to get used to all the differant umps, because some umpires are reluctant to give anything and some like to fire the batsman out if they think he's playing with his pad.

What if the glove isnt on the bat? you cant be given out caught in those circumstances so if it gets hit in front is that LBW or is it handled ball?

Thats not a quiz, I really dont know.

And what about Andrew Strauss this season? And the poor fellow has now to pay for this with a place itself in the England team - the man who I think is the best bet for captaining the side if no Vaughan is there. In fact, talking on sidelines, rather than this old debate about Bopara vs Dalrymple, why doesn't England simply play Strauss instead of either of them?

Strauss had a very unlucky summer in Australia he recieved bad decisions, freak catches and brillaint balls. There was nothing he could have done, I thought he was in very good form he was just plainly unlucky.
