No, it has been done before. I recall that the second encounter between India & Australia in the 1983 World Cup was extended to the second day. India batted first and set a modest target. It started to rain soon after Oz started their reply. Those were saner pre-Duckworth-Lewis days and the game was carried over to the next day. Oz collapsed, India won and went on to win the tournament itself .

"Saner" is that like in the 1992 world cup when you had a rain interuption and you lost say 10 overs - the lowest scoring 10 overs where removed from the first teams score - so if the first team scored 250 and in that score had 10 maidens then the second team would still have to get 251 to win but now off 40 overs.

A one day international should be just that. One day.

If it rains then tough. The Aussie's and the Windies should get one point each.

No, I disagree in the strongest possible manner. That idiotic rule contributed to sending the West Indies out of the 2003 World Cup when they were obliged to share points with a minnow team (Bangladesh, was it?). That rule can make a good team lose its position and put pressure on them for the subsequent matches. I am glad that they have the extra day proviso now.
