April 19th, Super 8s: Bangladesh vs The West Indies

BD won the toss and put the Windies to bat. This is one of 2 chances for the home team to salvage some pride. I hope to see at least some good batting from Gayle, Lara etc.

Windies 17/2 after 10 overs; Gayle gone. Samuels was dropped, or it could have been worse. Strange way of 'playing for pride'.

What a shambles the West Indies have been in these super eights. They make England look decent.

That's right. England can look forward to coming home with a victory. The Windies are roaring along at less than a run and a half per over.

I don't understand it. In the Champions trophy they were really strong; upset the Aussie's in the early stages and made it to the final with Gayle getting man of the tournament. They are playing on their own pitches in front of their own people for the pride of the carribbean, yet it seems they lack motivation or passion. On paper their batting lineup is great!

Beats me. I wonder what the likes of Sobers, Lloyd, Richards, Holding etc must be feeling as they watch this?

Holding always talks about how the team seem to lack the motivation and discipline required to succeed. You can tell how sad he gets in the commentary. When one looks at the fast pacers they have now, and then think of what they once had.....

Anyway, Sarwan to the crease now...

I was holidaying in St Vincent's a few years ago and one of the locals told me that teenagers are increasingly led to believe that there is no financial security in Caribbean cricket. This means that a lot of them have no interest in the game or even if they do, don't play it with their hearts like their predecessors used to. Sad really.

That is terrible. I mean, people talk about the poor state of affairs of cricket in England, but the fact is that they have the second best test team in the world and the game is proving very popular there. West Indian cricket is in a state of disaster. I look forward to seeing how Sarwan does as captain.

Sarwan is doing OK so far as a batsman, at least in this match. He is trying to push the score along with Chanderpaul.
