April 21,Super Eight - West Indies vs England

The West Indies - England game starts later today. Both teams are out of the World Cup and are facing identical problems and are completely out of form. This match would definetely be a thriller since they are both out of from. They may be out of the World Cup,but it will be an important game for them. The winner will take the 5th spot and the other will take the 6th with Ireland being 7th and Bangladesh 8th.A 5th spot would be encouraging for both teams when they play each other in a few weeks.

The match would also be the last of the Super Eights with the 2 semi-finals and the final to come.

I too hope that it is a good match and that Lara really goes out in style. It has been a joy to watch him bat over the last 15 odd years. On song, there simply cannot be any comparison with the "Prince'.

I'll be rooting for Lara and his team. Whatever the merits or otherwise of his leadership, the fact remains that he is a great batsman and (considering his achievements), a good-natured character. It is only fair to wish that he goes out with a big innings for himself and a match victory.

Any prospect of a changed England side to give the others a run out? I'd be inclined to rest Flintoff (promoting Bopara), play Plunkett ahead of Mahmood and get Dalrymple in for Strauss.

Vaughan
Bell
Pietersen
Bopara
Collingwood
Dalrymple
Broad
Nixon
Plunkett
Panesar
Anderson

They might get hammered but it's all good experience.

I like the look of that team Rachael. I don't think it will happen. I saw a pic on Getty of Mahmood, Anderson and Panesar sitting together looking dejected so maybe they will be replaced by Broad, Plunkett and Mahmood. Hope I am wrong.

I wasn't far out... though it's Bell and Panesar missing out rather than (more sensibly) Flintoff and Strauss. I'd not read anything into the changes other than a desire to give squad players a game - very sensible.

Looks like Gayle is trying to come back. He just smashed 22 runs off a Plunkett over.

Interesting. Dalrymple, Broad and Plunkett in for Panesar, Mahmood and Bell.
Will we miss the extra batsman though?

Good to see Strauss opening - I think!

Quote:
Twenty four off the over. And that's about what the bowling deserved.
35.6 Plunkett to Samuels, FOUR, a hat-trick of fours, and that's the best of the lot - he gave himself room and cut that through point, classic text-book stuff and four all the way
35.5 Plunkett to Samuels, FOUR, poor ball, short, and Samuels pulls that through midwicket and again the ball just has enough legs to beat the fielder
35.5 Plunkett to Samuels, (no ball) FOUR, and a no-ball to follow, Samuels steps to leg and cracks that through straight midwicket and Flintoff's dive is to no avail as the ball still trickles over the rope
35.5 Plunkett to Samuels, 1 wide, loopy slower ball, looping all the way down the leg side and taken on the second bounce by Nixon
35.4 Plunkett to Chanderpaul, 3 runs, opens the face of the bat and steers that between fielders in the covers, pulled up a yard inside the rope. Class
"Bowling, bowling," booms Nixon, unaware that on TV Ian Botham is savaging his technique
35.3 Plunkett to Chanderpaul, no run, outside off, Chanderpaul leaves it alone
35.2 Plunkett to Samuels, 1 run, slower ball, Samuels waits and pats it into the off side and strolls the single
35.1 Plunkett to Samuels, SIX, superb village-green hitting, Samuels steps to leg and hammers that back over the bowler, hit with real power and six all the way.
That really helps.

We didn't half bowl some crap early on; Plunkett's first few overs were miserable. Vaughan having to bowl himself for 10 overs showing how desperate we were.

West Indies are 300 all out; there was a foundation for maybe 330 but I don't think we can chase anything more than 50 runs at the moment before we choke.

It's a shame Lara only made 18 but I'm sure he'll be pleased with the way his side batted (all be it with a little help from their friends ).
