England ODI batting order / balance

Unless Moores completely loses the plot and starts believing that Prior has the technique to open the innings.. it seem likely that the ODI side for the forthcoming tournament will line up as follows...

Alastair Cook (Essex)
Ian Bell (Warwickshire)
Owais Shah (Middlesex) / Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire) / Michael Yardy (Sussex)
Kevin Pietersen (Hampshire)
Paul Collingwood (Durham, capt)
Matt Prior (Sussex)
Dimitri Mascarenhas (Hampshire)
Stuart Broad (Leicestershire) / Liam Plunkett (Durham)
Ryan Sidebottom (Nottinghamshire)
Monty Panesar (Northamptonshire)
James Anderson (Lancashire)

The other obvious option would be Yardy instead of Broad / Plunkett...

Mascarenhas will presumably be under pressure to show that he should be the one to make way for Flintoff, with whoever plays at three having similar fears about Bopara's return.

I'd be happy with that. Except it would be worth opening with Trott and having Bell at 3. Otherwise we will have learnt nothing from the World Cup. We need to have someone explosive at the top, so from our squad it would have to be either Trott or Prior.
Theres no way I'd have Broad anywhere near the team so It would have to be either Yardy or Plunkett. I suppose one of those could make way for Flintoff long term.

I think Prior will open and Bell will be at 3 or otherwise we will just get off to the same plodding starts we did in the World Cup.Prior is now a more confident player after doing well in the test side and should be able to transfer some form over to the one day game.It isn't as if the West Indies have a great bowling attack so stick him up there and see what he is made of.

Bell would be more suited down the order when the spinners come on.

Cook, Prior, Trott, Pietersen, Collingwood, Bell, Mascarenhas, Plunkett, Sidebottom, Panesar, Anderson.
Collingwood ahead of Bell as he has more time to make some more centuries. Mascarenhas and Plunkett for the big hitting at the end hopefully with one of the top order still there.

they desperately need someone in the top three who can exploit the powerplays. prior may not have the technique to open but if pieterson has to come in after 4 overs anyway then what does it matter? that top three is always going to have a shoddy look about it unless trescothick comes back.

I agree. What happened to Mal Loye? Sure, he didn't get a big score but he his 30 or 40 runs, got England going and didn't put the middle order under pressure. Trescothick is the man for the job obviously but England want to have people who bat themselves in and pick bad balls off which isn't bad because when they stay in and score a 100 (Like Matthew Hayden did in the World Cup so often) they accelarate during the latter stages of their innings. But then again, Australia had Gilchrist to accelarate at the beginning so the pressure as less off Hayden. I guess someone like Bell to open is OK but we need the aggression of Trescothick or the next best thing, Shah to come in and attack just to try and take the pressure off. It is better Shah goes out for 10 runs off 5 balls than Vaughan and Bell make 10 runs in 10 overs before being dismissed.
