Off Spin Variations

Hi all. There havent been many Off Spin Variation balls around, so i thought i'd post some i know of just for those looking for more variation. Feel free to reply with your own variation balls.

1. Doosra

The Doosra isnt something i invented. It was created by Saqlain Mushtaq, a Pakistani off Spinner. The bowl is balled out of the back of the hand with alot of top spin. Let me give a detailed explanation on how it is done. The ball is gripped in the normal Off Break action, i like to have by third finger sticking out so i can give the ball more spin with the third finger. You come in with your normal off spin action, expect you turn your wrist so that the back of your hand faces to the batsmen. Also, bend your wrist so it faces towards 1st slip. This action should allow the ball to turn the other way. What i do is i snap my third finger inwards so it bends as it was straight before and not bent. This gives the ball additional Spin. Also, having your elbow face towards the right helps bowl the Doosra too(if your a right handed Off Spin bowler).

2. Top Spinner

This is something i came up with. It might be a re-discovery so forgive me if this Bowl belongs to someone else.
Basically, the back on the hand faces towards the batsman like the Doosra, expect you dont invert you wrist in wards. Also, Keep the leg you balance on straight and keep your head straight too.

3. Arm Ball

This isnt my ball either. The Arm ball is a ball with no spin on it. Just bowl it and put no spin on the ball. Remember to bowl it in your own action.

I have 2 more ones which i will keep to myself :P. They both turn the opposite way to the Off Break :P

Welcome to World-A-Team, Offspinner.

From your post, it sounds like you are a serious cricketer. Who are you? Where do you play, at what level of cricket, and for which team(s)?

Im am a very serious cricketer infact. I Live in Ontario, Canada. I have been playing cricket since i was 7. I dont really play for any team as it is hard to find a good club here, but i am looking to extend my Cricket and join a club, or possibly more.

Top stuff, as an off-spinner myself who plays at a decent level I know many variations. You have named but three that at use. The top-spinner is nothing new, it is traditionally a leg-spinners delivary, but an offy can use it. It gains extra bounce off the pitch looking to catch a glove and spin up to aa close catcher.

The teesra, aswell as the doosra is being developed by one Saqulain Mushtaq, I havent seen any pictures of the wrist/finger position yet, but it will be another variation for the off-spinner.

At me Cricket practice today I bowled some decent doorsa's. Got the ball turning, not a big amount but enough to make the batsmen abit confused, Cheers again!

Theres a couple of people who bowl backspinners that skid on (Murali for one). When im messing around in the nets I used to bowl some fingerspun legbreaks, out of the front of the hand rather than the back, which serve as reasonable doosras if you master them. You could try dropping your grip on the ball a bit so it spins horizontally like a pancake - they stay low and are hard to hit. Other than that the best way to get wickets is using a little drift or swing so the batsman doesnt know where the balls landing. The best way it often to just experiment and see what you can do in the nets.

The bowl i get wickets with the most is the Top Spinner. I always seem to confuse the batsmen to whether the ball will go like a normal Off Spinner or whether it will get Extra bounce and "jump" up after it bounces. For me the bastman is usually guessing how high the ball will bounce rather then which way the ball will turn :P

I did try that one, however it keeps getting "stuck" in my hand and im letting it go too late. Sure with abit of work I will get it going. Only took me 3 bowls to get my doorsa going (Dead proud of that )
