Waste of Money

PCB has a habit of wasting money.
Waqar Younis is being paid a lot of money yet Mohammed Sami has not improved much
Jonty Rhodes was getting $1000 a day yet Pakistan feilding is as bad as it was before

Do you people think PCB should not squander this much money?

I thought Sami was unlucky not to have picked up a few more wickets at Lord's (due to catching) and also at Headingley. He was bowling with good pace and accuracy at Headingley, once he got his confidence up with a wicket or two, this allowed him to bowl his last 7 overs of England's second innings for only 23 runs, 3 runs per overs compared to his over economy in the innings of 4.5. Maybe this does not seem a huge difference and it's not the greatest source of evidence either but he's said (to Ramiz Raja I think) that he is low on confidence. The only thing that brings this back is faith shown by the selectors to pick him in the side or a lengthy stint in first class cricket and taking wickets (where he does have an impressive record), it's worked with cricketers in the past, Jimmy Anderson being a perfect example.

The one thing I can say, in defence of Jonty, is that he can't catch the balls for Pakistan in the middle. He can only teach them the best techniques for fielding and catching the ball, he can't put them under the pressures of the test arena in a training session can he?

I think there is only so much a specialized coach can do in helping players. They could make the Pakistan side the perfect side in training; Sami hitting the spot in the nets on every delivery and bowling at 90mph; the fielders taking every catch that Jonty throws at them. However, it is the mental side of the game that could be affecting their ability to use their skills; whether they need the confidence to go out and perform by taking wickets and holding catches I don't know. There are also some cricketers who will never make it at the top level purely because of the mental side of the game, only time and opportunity can tell us this.

Umer I think Pakistan is wasting to much money. JONTY maybe the greatest feilder to paly the game is not the best feilder in the game at the moment. I am shure Jonty is not the Jonty he was. And for Waqar King of Sultan Swing he isnt that bowler he was. We all get old and we all change.....

But Uham, most coaches are no longer at their best when they become coaches!! The point is that they have experince and knowledge having been there and done it that will hopefully benefit the players they are coaching. The question really is, how long do you give them? I doubt you can expect to see results overnight and it may take many months or years to get a player up to the level they were at.

I am not saying its gonna take care of the problem for sure but there is a great probability of improvement if we hire a good Australian fielding coach for our team. Since the introduction of Greg Chappell, there is a dramtic change in Indian fielding. It seems almost impossible to beat Yuvraj, Kaif and Suresh Raina thru the covers to get a four. I think besides the commitment of these players, a lot of credit goes to Chappell.

Yes, Chappell does deserve the credit. But that does not mean that another Australian will be able to do exactly that to Pkaistan or that a coach of some other nationality wont be able to do that.

And then there are a few more things we are overlooking in the improvement in the Indian fielding. People like Yuvraja, Kaif and Raina were always good fielders. The younger generation of cricketers in India are trained like that early on. Its not that they were average in the beginning and a coach came in and turned them into great fielders.

Fielding is something that need to be taught at a younger age. If someone is not a natural diver, its very difficult for a coach to make create a diver out of him. Look at Anil Kumble of India. He puts so much efforts on the field trying to dive around but he struggles to get his timing and balance right. But if you look at Yuvraj Singh, he is a natural diver and a coach will always find it much easier to correct whatever minor defects he finds in him and Yuvraj himself will be able to correct things as he is already a good fielder.

I do not think it is a waste of money to hire someone for pakistan's fielding or bowling effort, i do not think khonty or waqar have even had 6 months under their belt at the moment to achieve results so let us wait, as fa as fast bowling is concerned we always attribute the negatives to the coach what bout the positives? Muhammad asif being coached and well i might add, Shoaibs whole attitude change?

well, obviously there is more than one factor in almost every acheivements one makes. Natural talents do pick up fast, however proper coaching does have the potential of bringing the best out of a player. The reason I mentioned Australian coash was pretty pretty simple. Australian fielding standard has consistently been on top in the last 3 decades, -rest of us-.. we all just follwed but never over came Australia, so an Australian coach becomes a natural first choice when it comes to fielding or any other aspect of the play, but yes, it does not automatically gurantee the results, however it increases the probability of acheiving the goals.
And what can i say about the diving scenario... Anil Kumble or anyother fielder shy of diving can practice swiming and diving from the diving board, heads down and straight into the water. Remember practice makes it perfect?

well said mate, i do agree that even natural talent requires proper coaching to make it perfect in that sense greg for india has done pretty well(Including the old fellas of the team)even when you look into srilankan team after tom moody's arrival they were double better in fielding than before(espcially younger ones) even bangladesh fielding aspects improve d vastly in last 2 years
i always wonder how come a great talented players of pakistan always had one area weaker that is fielding
no one can question their batting or bowling prose but fielding and catching are always a worry even after bob woolmer and jonty's coaching
i guess a permenant fielding coach like in lanka would help pakistan a lot
