What should be Akhtar and Asif's punishment?

Since this is the first ever any Pakistani sportsman is under question for doping in any sports, I think a strong warning is enough. These guys already got punished by being pulled out of Champions Trophy; however, severe punishment should be imposed if it happens again.

I don't know...

The sporting world frowns heavily upon "performance enhancing" drugs. Cricket, so far, have escaped really big issues. This is the worst one since Shane Warne was banned for a year. And if you recall, the WADA was not very happy with the "leniency" showed to Warne. (I believe a 2-year ban was called for).

So, I can't see how Shoaib and Asif will get away with nothing more than a warning IF the B-sample is also positive.

And then of course, there is another thing to consider. The PCB will want the rest of the world to see that they are taking a "tough stance" on this issue. So, if these 2 don't come up with very good explananations as to why they have these levels of nandrolone in their systems, I am afraid it does not look very good for them.

I don't know if "ignorance" is a good enough explanation though...But Warne got away with it...

Just a slap on the wrist though? Not likely.

How can they be given just a slap on the wrist? what sort of example will this set for the youth of pakistan. Next thing we know they will all be taking performence enhancing drugs to bowl faster.. bat better whatever. They need to be made an example of IMO. So that noone will dare follow this path in the future.

I guess a year ban is the minimum they should get. They will probably try to give them a 4 month ban though to get them back for the World Cup.

I read somewhere that although the minimum penalty for a first offence of this nature is 2 years, the boards (in this case the Pakistan Cricket Board) can impose their own penalty.

I reckon we have to wait till the B-sample results are out...and then start speculating again.
