Good idea,it stops any accidental mistakes with someones English being blown out of proportion.

Does the rule apply to Woolmer?

Er....isn't there a greater liklihood of "accidental mistakes" during translation?

There's also a chance, I'd have thought, that the Pakistanis' comments will be reported in Pakistan and not elsewhere - regardless of how good a job Mr Mir does. I just can't see cricket stories running "Inzamam, speaking through an interpreter, said ...", unless there is some confidence in the interpreter's skills. Mr Mir might be a great interpreter for all I know, but it's not his job and he has no track record for the world press to rely on, hence my concern that some parts of the press might just fail to report rather than taking a chance on Mr Mir's skills.

I think it's a bit short-sighted, to be honest, and it would not surprise me to see the decision reversed at some point.

How can there be?

There are more than enough people who speak both languages fluently who will be used to translate. It is the players who use broken English that it will help, they could accidently use the wrong word and it gets blown out of proportion.

Well, there can be. I cannot recall the exact circumstances or conversation, but nearly 20 years ago, there was a good deal of misunderstanding between Javen Miandad, David Gower and an interpreter 'fluent in both languages' after a match which Pakistan had just won. Miandad himself was speaking in English, but there were one or two officials who were not and hence the interpreter. David Gower was trying to make light of England's loss by cracking a few jokes and there was some mention of drinking beer. It all started from there and almost got out of hand before common sense prevailed.
