Posting whole articles from other sources

Occasionally, we see members posting whole articles as threadstarters. Some members do this far too often which is a concern for me for a number of reasons. This may breach copyright laws. Even if it doesn't I have noticed that these posts very rarely stimulate good discussion. In fact, some are not replied to at all. Generally, they attract little interest and produce dud threads. Finally, because of the size of these posts they use up a lot of disk space on the server. I'd rather not fill my allotted disk space too quickly.

For all these reasons, may I ask you not to make a habit of this practice. You'll find that members respond best when you summarize an article in your own words, give your point-of-view, then leave a link to the full article. If the article is only available to subscribers as a paid service it is unlikely that the link will work for the majority of people here. Snippets from these articles are probably okay as long as you acknowledge the source. However, if you want the best response to your post please add some of your own thoughts. I think that is important.

The Possible way out - Zimbabwe ban cricket journalists thread contains many posts which reference to news articles. These are good examples of the correct way to comment on articles so they promote further discussion. Some of the best examples in that thread are by flanflinger and Occasional Fan.
