I want us to play our natural game: Arthur

http://content.cricinfo.com/southafr...ry/213058.html

Quote:
"When we play against them at the end of the year I want the team to play our own game and not try and follow their play," Arthur was quoted as saying in News24.com website. "When they bat at four runs per over I don't want us to try and bat at four-and-a-half runs to the over. We should not worry about what they do, but rather play to our own strengths and as well as we possibly can."
Interesting calls from the new coach. Most coaches stress the importance of matching Australia. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Some sense at last! I wondered when someone would wake up...

The nice thing about the Aussies scoring at 4-5 an over is that they {a} give you every chance to get them out.. and {b} give you lts of time to score your runs. The way to beat them is to pick a top order that takes it's inspiration from Kirsten.. and wait for the cracks to appear.

I've long argued that the Aussies can only get away with packing their team with attacking batsmen (Hayden, Ponting, Clarke, Gilchrist) because the opposition isn't that good: that's being vindicated now - the dire need for Langer, martyn and katich has rarely been so evident!

Langer, Martyn and Katich's scoring rate in ODIs is comparable to that of Ponting's and greater than Hayden's.

Yes, but if you don't get the wickets Australia will post 600 runs in a day and a half, which will always play on the opposition batsmen, even more so if they lose an early wicket. And the way the Aussies declare they normally leave a 15-20 over period to try and balst a couple of wickets out.

By the way, how are you being vindicated. Australia has only lost one test series this decade - against India in India. They have always had a combination of agressive and classical batsmen in the side. Thats why Australia are able to climb out of a hole if in trouble, or if they have wickets try and pile the runs on quickly. System still working and no problems with that part of Australia's play.

That maybe, but Pontings and Hayden's averages are alot better than Langer and Katich's. While Martyn's average is the best out of all of them, he still comes in down the order against lesser bowlers and fieldsman in run saving positions rather than wicket taking ones.

That may well be but my point was about scoring rate which is statistically our way of analysing who is "attacking" and "defensive". I wouldn't call any of the Aussie bats defensive in opposition to the "attacking" ones that Rachel mentioned.
