It is a shame. What is also a shame is that there was a cover up afterwards. They let Cronje walk the King comission was a joke it relied on Cronje telling the truth. What do they take us for?
Cronje should of been taken to court and put in prison where he belonged. We don't know who else was involved in the SA side and we don't know who else was involved in World cricket.
Its a good thing SA never won the 1999 World cup a blessing in disguise.
Its seems to me from time to time players are going to take money in sport. It has been happening throughout the history of sport. I was reading a book that later became the film Goodfellas and Henry Hill told the author how they bribed basketball players. I never thought much about it until Cronje was caught.
The only way these people can be treated is through criminal court. Reduced sentence for information.

Yeah, its a bit strange. Half of SA wanted him in jail and the other half loved the guy and felt sorry for him. I still think he should be remembered in SA as a legend. No doubt that what he did was wrong, but he also did allot of good for cricket in this country, and no one can deny that. It has however, taken our team a long time to recover from loosing someone so influential and I for one hope he rests in peace.

What else do you do with criminals but put them in jail. Half the country loved him. Yes but thats not based on any rational argument its based on identification. All the rational argument is on the side of the people who wanted to see justice. Because what Hansie did was a crime he was in taking money to make sure the course of the game would go one way or the other. He was being paid by SA cricket board to represent them and he was taking money from someone else with a different agenda. This is corrupt.
As for his contribution to SA cricket does this in anyway compensate. I fail to see how.

Hansie Cronje betrayed cricket and ruined the game he once loved, he belonged in jail and people who love cricket should think that to because he ruined south africas cricket reputation
