Post Eddie Barlow is dead

The former South African all-rounder Eddie Barlow died aged 65. He played at a time when South Africa were very strong with the likes of Greame Pollock, Mike Procter, Dennis Lindsay and Peter Pollock in the same side. In 1999, he was appointed the coach of Bangladesh but he quit the post in 2000 after being paralysed from a stroke.

Very sad news.Never saw him play but my dad told me he was one of a long list of South Africans who would have been top international players had they not been banned.

Unhappy sad

This is very sad news. I didnt see him play. But to me every person in cricket is important even if it is Mohmmad asif [no offence to him good talent].Cricket is a great sport with great atlethics and lots of respect for each teams shure once in a while but still all teams have respect for each other. RIP Eddie barlow.

I'm posting a comment we received via the Contact Us form in relation to your assertion that Barlow quit his post as Bangladesh coach.

Hi there
I have just read your "Blog" which says that Eddie Barlow quit as Bangladesh coach. He did not quit, he was not wanted after he had his stroke.
Cally Barlow
I too, would like this confirmed one-way or the other. Did he quit or was he sacked?

Cally Barlow
Cally Barlow?!? Any relation to Eddie Barlow??

EDIT: Actually, it looks like Cally was Eddie's wife at some point. The following article from cricinfo shows that his contract with the BCB was terminated 8 months early due to mutual agreement:

Actually, I recall seeing newsreel footage of a Test match between South Africa and Australia in the late 60s where the bespectacled Eddie Barlow was bowling to Keith Stackpole. Barlow was not the fastest bowler in the world, but he had a strange 'airborne' delivery action which was quite intimidating. A great all-rounder. RIP.

Eddie Barlow, was confident almost to the point of arrogance. But he had reason to be.

He was the type of person to go to the doorman of a nightclub and cockily ask "Do you know who I am?!".

A lot of people ask "What if..." about former players such as Graeme Pollock and Barry Richards.

But surely Eddie Barlow would have also stamped his authority on cricket if allowed into the international arena???

R.I.P. Eddie Barlow - a great cricketing talent.

Cally Barlow was Eddie Barlows wife, but he also had two other wives, names Helen Wheelwright, and Julianne Bailey

But it would seem Carry Barlow is right to a point, Bangladesh did replace an ailing Eddie Barlow - but had they no option? click here.

That's stating the obvious, ern. Question is why wasn't Barlow replaced temporarily? A decision was made that Barlow had no future as Bangladesh coach. Who ultimately made that decision? Would Barlow have preferred to stay on as coach long term? Did Barlow resign on the basis he no longer wanted the job? I don't think so. He obviously wanted to continue as coach after his rehabilitation but it seems the BCB felt he may be sidelined too long and wanted to move forward without him. Barlow may have complied with the BCB's stance but he wasn't necessarily happy despite the media statement suggesting the decision was by mutual agreement.

The fact that he was replaced was obvious Mike - but I have read a lot on this subject earlier, and Barlow was prety ill, I think it was obvious that after a major stroke, Barlow would in Bangladesh eyes, be up to he job, and to be fair they were probably right.

Barlow I read did want to keep going, but but the question was he fit enough, I doubt it - but it's not easy finding that answer, also who would have wanted to coach Bangladesh temporarily?.

Stating the obvious I think answers the question.
