Dear Diary: "I have nothing to hide..."

source: bigstarcricket.com

Herchelle Gibbs believes his "Indian dilemma" will soon be over. Gibbs and Boje have not toured India since the whole "episode".. With the ICC now promising to sort things out.

Recently Daryll Cullinan said Gibbs is a mood player. That he lacks hunger and the novelty of success at test level has worn off....(Wisden)

Mickey Arthur says Gibbs is the "Ferrari of the SA batting line-up"..(same Wisden)

Great, so SA has a moody Ferrari...At least he's hungry about cricket again. Lets see how this Sri Lanka-India series shapes up for him...

The true Gibbs

I am tired of everyone criticising Herschelle Gibbs. Let me just point out that Daryll Cullinan is quick to criticise Gibss. Lets compare their records. Firstly Gibbs has played only 7 matches more than Cullinan but he has 1000 more runs. Secondly Gibbs averaged over 49 a year ago. Cullinan never even came close to that. Even though Gibbs is going through a lean patch, he still averages more than Culinan. I also remember that Cullinan refused to play for SA because of money disutes, so who is he to criticise Gibbs. FACT: Herschelle Gibbs is the biggest talent to come out of SA since Barry Richards. He has more shots than Cullinan and Kallis. Teams need these players. You dont see the Indian public criticise Tendulkar, so why do South Africans keep criticising Gibbs. These hypocrits forget that Gibbs played the biggest role in winning that great one day against Australia. Gibbs is a match winner, SA need more players like him and less boring players like Dippenaar. People say test cricket is boring. Well if you watch a partnership between Kallis and Rudolph, its easy to see why. Gibbs always gives everything for the team, He unlike Kallis does not care about personal milestones. Please give him the credit he deserves. BY the way, Gibbs has said that he is prepared to travel to India for the ICC trophy.

gibbs_fan, I love your passion for your guy ! But Cullinan, Neil Manthorp, Brian McMillan were not talking about the oodles of talent Gibbs possesses. EVERYONE agrees on that... The were critisising his lack of application sometimes..

Apart from talent, Gibbs is a "genius". (says Manthorp and many of us agree) But like most geniuses, he's sometimes rebellious, stubborn, insecure...

And you can't disagree that he loves to throw away his wicket with some stupid shots sometimes...Almost like he has to prove himself over and over again...That's why SA needs a Gibbs who applies himself, like he did at that Wanderers ODI. But he must do it more often. I for one, expect it from him.

I'm also a fan...And for one thing, I also don't want to see his flamboyance gone. I just want flamboyance, with application.

This is flogging a dead horse asking someone to change their attitude to the game after all these years. You take what you get. And what you have got with Gibbs is very good.
He is after all these years an unknown quanity what Gibbs will walk to the crease on any particular day.
He will never be great but in the past period he would of made I guess any Test side including the Aussies.

John, you know that since readmission to world cricket, SA has not had a player with more "discipline issues" than Gibbs. (not going into all of those) Yes, he's the best batsmen in the SA line-up. Everyone agrees on that. But everybody has been waiting for years for Gibbs to "change his attitude" or "mature". It's not a new thing.

Secondly. It's that "unknown quantity" you get with Gibbs that is so frustrating. You know what the man is capable of, and he knows it too... Gibbs has about 3/4 years of international cricket left in him? He needs to perform more consistently now, if he wants to be remembered for his flair and style, more than non-cricketing off-the-field stuff.

Genius Gibbs***

Iam a hard core fan of Gibbs.I dont know about his moode or attitude.but one thing i know is
that he is batting genius. The manner in which he treats the opposition bowling is trully 'ruthless'.
His stone breaking cut shots, glamorous cover drives...Trully he is a packet of entertinement
of highest quality.

Well, lets see if we'll see some of that "ruthlessness" you mention when he takes the field in the CT.

Seems like Gibbs cannot be charged in India after all? Well, at least not under the IPC (Indian Penal Code), as neither bribery nor attempts to fix a match constitute offences under this code.

I just don't understand how police officials handling the SAME case, can have different views on it though... Interesting...

Well obviously he has nothing to hide since its been out in the open when the whole Hanse Cronje affair happened... he took money from Crojne to throw a match and then made 74 in it.. claiming he forgot he had to throw it lol... so he first betrayed his team then the bookies... does not say much for his charecter. He is an amazing batsmen though.. although sometimes ill tempered and eccentric.. but then genius is just one step from insanity, over that fine line.

Plus he has now named three more south african test players who were involved

Playing in a warm-up game today against an MCA Pres. XI, Gibbs scored only 18 off 18. And once again he got bowled...Seems to have been a problem with him of late.

Anyhow, as far as the "underperforimg for money" issue is concerned, Gibbs served his 1 year punishment.

Others get away with no punishment at all...

Oh, and according to the official SA Cricket website, Gibbs did NOT name any former Proteas... I guess we'll just have to wait and see then.

Yep I seem to remember a certain Shane Warne & Mark Waugh accepting some bucks for giving info to bookies. Apparently they said they only gave info on "pitch conditions & make up of the sides". This only came out a couple of years later as the ACB swept it under the mat & they got away with a slap on the wrist...
